I've only ever played in about 5 competitons and have been lucky I guess that I've never got into much trouble..... but I have a really simple question regarding a lost ball.

I'm playing my shot from the fairway into the green and slice/hook badly and it disappears into the cabbage. My thoughts on the rules are to look for 5 mins and if you can't find it to drop back from where I took my shot from.

Is this the case?

In casual games we always drop one within a couple of clubs length of where it disappeared and get on with it to save time.

this is the case, the casual game procedure is common but not appropriate to competition play ie not within the rules.

even better (if the balls gone any distance) is to play a provisional ball straight away - then go looking :)
