Take a rule book with you, whenever some fool quotes you a mythical rule chuck him the rule book and ask him to point out his mythical rule. When he cant proceed as you intended

That's fine, but just because he can't find it in the Rules Book doesn't mean he's necessarily wrong. The best advice is to proceed as you fit think. If he disagrees with your course of action he must lodge a claim and the matter can then be sorted out after the match with the Committee. See Rule 2-5.

If it's stroke play, then exercise the option to play a second ball - See Rule 3-3.
