Lose yardage but on the fairway??

I have pretty much left the driver in the bag the last 4 rounds. I tee off with my 17deg Callaway Heavenwood and while 7 out of 10 shots are deadly off the tee, the other 2 aren't nearly as wide as the driver (driver would be 1 in 7 are good). Yes, I have a longer 2nd, but I'm okay with that if I'm in play. Probably hitting it slightly longer and straighter than my 3 wood.

Just ask Richart how effective it is! ;)

However, once I've got the swing transition sorted, I'll be back to the big stick.. hopefully.

You are just a big girls blouse, who has even been known to hit a six iron off the tee.:D Must admit you are annoyingly straight with that club, but think you should find its real owner and give it back. !!

Depends on the course. East Brighton, where the rough is fairly short and easy to play out of? I'd settle on being further down but in it.
Bearwood Lakes where the rough can be penal??? I'll take an easy 280 up the middle every day

Think that problem with your keyboard has returned Rob, and 1's are printing as 2's.

Just a thought. Remember many moons ago a vid called break 90 in 30 days. In which the guy played the whole round with just a 6 iron wedge and a putter. There was not one hole where he did not have atleast 1 put for par. So who needs to hit it long then eh.

What do you do if you want to break 70?

If the fairways have become hard like this summer due to the low rainfall in our area then I prefer the ball to be in the first cut of rough where it will often sit up a little.

I dont always try and bomb the driver. I like to get into my favourite approach distance where I can, this is around 140 yards where I can take an easy committed swing with an 8 or 9 iron depending on the slope and hazards.

Our course doesn't have very penal rough (first cut anyway) but a lot of the holes are tree lined. Not all big trees, but a 10' tree can prevent you going for a green as much as a 50' one.

In a normal round, I'll usually find myself with no shot at the green maybe 3 or 4 times.

I'd still rather have my usual distance though rather than accuracy.

Why?
Because I'd rather work on keeping my driver straight than having to make my mid irons as accurate as my short irons.

If I could drive the ball as straight as I do but 30yds longer I'd take it, but I wouldn't Sacrifice accuracy for any more than I've got

I'm perfectly happy being a big girls blouse if it means I'm on the fairway. Even happier if you start letting me play of the reds... I'd drive the green no bother! :p

I don't think it worked for the real owner, which is why it was snapped in half in the trees! ;)

I wish it were that simple at my course. Quite often there is gorse in play which changes the risk reward scenario but straight choice between rough and fairway for 30 yards I'd choose rough

At the moment the rough on most of the par 4's and 5's is very penal and to be avoided at all cost. I'm not a long hitter anyway (235-240 on a good day) and not the most accurate so it isn't surprising the glory days this season have all come when the driver has behaved itself. I can't really afford to give more distance up but need to find a way to hit more fairways.

Very interested by the response of a lot of the experienced guys, I have only been playing for a few months, but the last couple of times i have played, my game has really improved. When I started my lessons I just kept hitting it as hard as i could,(drove my pro up the wall) but had little success and this is how I continued to play.
The last few times I have gone out I have been totally relaxed and not tried to "tank" every shot, and my scores have tumbled, I this feel as only happened as I have changed that aspect my game?

Ok ive pondered over this and i think it really does depend on the course, around my home track even the longest par 4, wind against off the whites is only a driver and 4/5i from about the 180yard range., but sunday im playing a course where on one of the par 4's, even a solid drive and a ripped 5w will still be short on their par4 15th....

can i re answer this after sunday.

i'd take accuracy over distance all day long.
If you can hit it consistently straight your score .

Trouble is standing on the tee hitting a 3 iron 200-10 yards or a 3 wood 230 yards there is still no guautee for me its going to go straight compared to the driver.

If i put a good swing on a longer clubs its going to go straight regardless whether its a driver, 3 wood or 3 iron, if i don't put a good swing on it there all going to slice or hook.

Also for me distance comes with accruacy, if i hit a driver straight its going to carry 230 ish.
If i don't its going to carry 200 yards and be in the xxxx

One thing I did towards the end of last summer was take a 3 wood when a par 4 hole was under 400 yds and took a driver if over. This generally worked, after having driver troubles for 2-3 months, worked for me and my scores slightly improved. Others may have a different distance in mind, but I hit a driver between 230-300 depending on all the normal variables. I play in lots of opens (so off the whites), whereby you tend to get more 400+ par 4 holes, compared to not many when playing of the yellows, unless a championship course.

At the end of the day, it is all about course management (if you practice it), but mid summer I had stopped doing it and just naturally always reached for the driver, but due to inconsistency my scores were suffering. I tried this 400 yard criteria and it worked, but I think it was mainly that I started thinking about it more than just being on Driver auto-pilot.However, lots of the opens I go are 4BBB format so my partner was always another get-out option.

It may work for some others.
