Looking to change club - Houghwood

I drove to Manchester the other day and I think Worsley would be about 25 mins up the east Lancs away! Ormskirk is supposed to be nice as well!
ORMSKIRK is probably the nicest course in the area, but you would need a letter from the popes wife to get in,a friend of my wifes(owns a delivery company) was on the list for 3 years had to have 3 members propose him and had 2 interviews THEN had to wait 6 months before they made a decision and for the first year your on approval so they could tell you to go after that,he joined birkdale whilst he was waiting, saying that it is fabolous and the steak and kidney pie is the best i have ever had.

Some excellent suggestions. Thanks for the advice. I've tried to limit the distance travelled due to the fact that most of my golf is played after i get out of bed following the night shift, and before picking the kids up from school at 15:15. This means that any extra travel eats into my golf time. Ormskirk would be lovely, but its harder to get into than a nuns delicates. I'll have a look at some of the St Helens courses and see if the courses fit my game. I've also arranged another round at Houghwood on my day off so that I can have a few pints afterwards and see if I like the feel of the place. Ive also considered putting my name down for S&A, as by the time I get in, the kids will be able to walk themselves home from school.....

Has anyone tried Chorley golf club near adlington. I'm hearing some decent reviews and its only 10 minutes away. Any members or ex members on here that can advise me.

I played it with a mate last year. Its a nice track and a good challenge, quite hilly iirc. Its a nice course that is definatley worth considering if its near you though.

Quit a few members have left Chorley over the last couple of years and come to Old Links due to problems with the greens.

Crikey, it sounds like it would be easier to find an 18yr old virgin than a quality all round club round here. I'll not quit though. There has to be somewhere that suits my needs.

Best thing to do is list all the prioritise all the things you want as a member. Location, Course, Social, price etc etc and see what you come up with. I think every club will have its good and bad points. Its a great excuse to go and play every course with a 20 mile radius as well :-).

Join S&A and you'll have twenty new best mates. :)

Have you tried mossock hall?
Not a bad course with good drainage, it very rarely closes
And the greens are very good
I'm pretty sure there's no joining fee either

I'll let you know when I've checked my lottery numbers. What are the fees at S&A these days?

Will have a look and check the distance. Cheers mate.

I spoke to a member about 2 years ago, and I think it was £1300 joining and the same for green fees, but they may have changed since.

I used to be a member at Chorley
It's a good varied layout that keeps you interested but its also a good friendly club with a great clubhouse. They've had problems with the greens in previous years but they've been much better this year.

If you fancy a knock on there just let me know.

Stay away from the new north west national. Eccleston park is ok, quite a friendly club, but I think houghwood is the best course in the area. I do agree with stu c, Haydock is a really nice course, good nick and a lot flatter (and I think cheaper) than houghwood. The only one I haven't played is up by rainhill, Blundell hills. That is supposed to be nice as well.

Just wondering why you say stay clear of the north west national? I only ask because I'm fairly new to golf but live fairly close to the course, so regularly play it and go the driving range there. As I say I'm pretty new to golf, but have been mulling the idea over in my head of maybe joining up to a club next year and was thinking of the north west national. With out sounding miserable, at the minute I'm just thinking of somewhere I can play regularly to help get my scores down, rather than the social benefits. Just interested to hear why you suggest saying clear of it?

I don't know the full score, so do a search under north west national for more info. However, the gist of it was a few years ago everyone paid their green fees as normal, the company went bust, and they all had to pay them to the new owners again (if they chose to). I'm not sure if it's the same owners now or not.

There was an article in the Liverpool Echo about it. Somebody posted a link on here, but I can not find it. To be honest, the practice facilities are great and the guy who has taken over the shop is doing a great job. However, the original clubhouse that was supposed to be is still a shell and everything is still done through the range so the social side and bar set up is not there yet. I would struggle justifying the fee and having very little off course facilities. Apparently the course is long, has a fair bit of water and pretty tight. If anybody fancies a knock there let me know, would be interested to play it.
