Advancing in years, handicaps rising by the month, we (he and she) want to move near children and grandchildren (one set in Oxford and one is Bristol). Tell me the best location (roughly between Oxford and Bristol) where there is a 'pretty' town with a friendly 'easy' golf club and which is within easy reach of 'facilities' i.e. not in the middle nothing but fields.

Pick a golf club and find a house nearby! But much depends on your budget, but keep it equi distant...ish!!

Calne/Chippenham might do.... close to Bowood GC, North Wilts and Chippenham! Castle Combe, Players Club not too far either

Marlborough is a nice town... got it's own golf course, North Wilts isn't far or is Bowood

My neck of the woods if i can help you. Marlborough is a decent enough track, its hilly! but most courses round here are!

In fact, looking at your requirements, my town Newbury is pretty well in the middle, 40 mins to oxford straight up A34 or 1hr to Bristol on M4.

Swindon and surrounding villages would also be a great shout, good road links between SN and OX. Then you could even go a little higher and get in the Cotswolds, beautiful part of the world!

The other option is to stay north of the M4 and look around the edge of the Cotswolds.

I discounted Frilford Heath as too near Oxford. Highworth is a muni 9 hole and Wrag Barn isnt up to much! :)

I thought about the straight line and didn't really consider North and West, but possibilities that way.... the triangle of Stroud , Dursley and Cirencester worth thinking about.

Chippenham has main line station in both directions too

I live in Chippenham so have some pointers. Plenty of courses within about 30 minutes drive including Bowood and Manor House at Castle Combe. Chippenham itself is an ok course with nice new clubhouse.
The town isn’t great for high street shopping but Bath is only 10 minutes away by train, in fact London is now only 1:15 away. Also got good road links as right on M4 so Oxford is only about an hour - with other easy access if M4/A34 is blocked

Bradford on Avon is a lovely town and has a great golf club (Cumberwell) it's near to Bath and has a good railway connection.

Been down to Cumberwell and it's a great set up with four loops of nine plus a par 3 course. Think from memory there's a range and short game area there as well
Really nice course is Cumberwell, the fact you can book any combination of courses keeps it interesting as each 9 is different including the orange which is open with few trees and no water. It does suffer a bit in the winter but so do most round here

Highworth 9 holer closed a while ago.
It had not been a Muni for quite a few years...….was part of the company trust that took over Broome Manor.
When did you last play Wragg Barn?

....shows how out of date I am then.... I moved from Wilts in 2009! :-) Played with a mate who is a member a year or so after that. I probably have a slight downer on Wrag Barn as I remember it when it first opened and the planted all the trees as little whips and the clubhouse was a portacabin! Its miles better now the trees have grown up, but you would go there on a golf break and if you lived nearby, surely you'd go to Frilford or Burford :-)

Thanks - I'll take a look (on-line) at Marlborough
I'd give a thumbs up for Marlborough as a lovely town - and have played the golf course a few times (though not for a good number of years now). As a visitor I found it a friendly club, interesting clubhouse with great views from the upstairs lounge, and the course is an enjoyable (though often very windy) downland course. Mind you - as you approach Marlborough from the motorway I recall my first impressions of the clubhouse being that it looked a bit like a spaceship had landed on the top of the hill :)
