On the news that two people are facing 17 years in prison for killing a lion in africa. What is wrong with people? can someone tell me why someone would want to hunt such creature? I think if they get caught they should leave them to get on with the hunt minus their riffle!!! even the scales out a little.

Utter scumbags

I can't really fathom it either- what do these morons get out of it? Effectively they are cowards; they are in no danger at all and completely protected by their guides!!!

I think if these idiots must do this there is a hard and fast rule- they take their own munitions; have no help whatsoever- no guides, no protective vehicles(all on foot) and need to walk in the wild- see how long they last.

Poor creatures don't have a chance

Some folk have more money than sense. They want to be different and also justify their place in the world. Some are power freaks and those who hunt are probably the worst ones. I used to hunt animals but I used a 400mm lens and a DSLR to shoot them. They stayed alive after I satisfied my appetite for the hunt.

is the one with the dentist in the US that actually shot the lion, who is currently the most hated man on the internet? Watch this, it will make you angry.

devils advocate (not relating to the current story, as that lion was not a 'canned' lion)

Some of the countries in question participating in this activity have no national exports, their only income is tourism. If done humanely (as in bred well, kept properly and shot with a rifle with backup shooters to ensure a quick kill), what is wrong with it? how is it different to grouse hunting or pheasant shooting, salmon fishing etc?

Rooter- how about a century ago there were 200,000 of these amazing animals in the wild- now there are about 30,000- all due to humans; but hey it's world isn't it?

I see what your saying. The bigger beast the more attention it'll draw I guess.

It's a tough one. I personally would like to see Crows, Pigeons and Seaguls controlled better but not everyone else will. I also think fox hunting, grouse shooting and badger culling to be cruel, but I don't mind chomping down on a beefy burger from Five Guys.

Having an end result to the kill, ok, as in food for the family etc etc, but this was pretty mindless game shooting for no reason other than to parade himself to his pals. Look what I can do, I have money. Lions don't tend to reproduce as much as grouse or smaller animals so just knocking a male off for fun is not helping the eco system in any way.

Several ways to look at it.

Looks like his personal business is going to suffer. Good!

I suspect he'll struggle to practice dentistry again anywhere now.

It is a different culture in the US where huntin, shootin n fishin is a way of life for many. But this guy seems to have taken it to the extreme and has behaved like a prized arse. I kind of feel sorry for those close to him who will no doubt suffer dogs abuse for no other reason than they are related to him. But you struggle to have any sympathy whatsoever for him.

Is it though? Not like he is in an international business. He may rename his practice, but I will bet you 99% of his clients know his pastime. In the northern states of the U.S. Big game hunting is a hugely popular pastime, I would wager he has pictures in his office if not more of a trophy.

His international reputation may suffer, but his customers will stay with him. All of the people 'attacking' him are not his customers or potential ones, there are all part of the I'm offended by something i was told I should be offended with.

Where is th hatred for the country, the game keepers? Don't hate the player, hate the game. He didn't track the lion on his own, he pie what he thought was a legal and legitimate company to fulfil one of his bucket list..

I still don't agree with lion hunting, but people can get very blinkered when news stories like this appear..

Have you watched the video I posted and seen exactly what he did?

Most peoples bucket list involved something like playing St Andrews, not paying a lot of money to fly out to Africa and kill one of the most popular tourist attractions in that area. And no he did no track the lion as such, but he was complicit in baiting it, which is also illegal.

Just purely on a moral level you have to ask what is going through the head of someone who feels the need to kill those types of animals (as in addition to lions he also has killed leopards, bears and rhino's), purely for fun. I agree he is probably taking the flak for the general repulsion most sane people would have for this hobby, but the simple answer is don't do such a repulsive thing if you can't see the outrage it will provoke.

And with regards to the offended brigade, then I'm not 100% sure how much of a leg golfers have to stand on, bearing in mind how offended they seem to get if someone has a shirt untucked on a golf course.;)

Excellent vid!

If you do have the urge to hunt that sort of beautiful creature, do it with a camera! Same amount of planning and technique required, but the end result is much better and can be repeated by others!

I don't like the idea of killing for fun/sport but don't mind the concept of culling where an aging population needs to have the older/unfit animals removed to sustain a better breeding program.

It's not like animals like lions are generally categorised as a 'pest' but I'd have thought you'd need to AT LEAST obtain a government sanctioned licence to even CULL a creature such as a lion, let alone shoot one with a bow and arrow

It makes me wonder where in the hell has this guy been for the past 50yrs with all the talk about ivory trades, whale harpooning and larger species practically on the edge of extinction.... did he never watch TV or does he literally not have a soul/moral code?

The latter - watch the video!

Culling the old Lions is quite common, a bit like deer stalking.
It looks like this guy was duped into thinking that this was what he was doing.

He is a member of a club in the US where you have to do so many kills of big animals and he was an extremely experienced hunter, with over 40 kills of safari animals, he wasn't some townie on his first shooting trip. He knew exactly what he was doing.

I haven't got my name down for the senior's open, honest I haven't...:( and with a bit of help I might be able to do a bit of that sire-ing stuff, as long as I get a rest halfway

He got in a land rover which was dragging a deer carcass behind it, they lured the lion out of the park and while it was feeding on the carcass the lion was illuminated with a spotlight. This "extremely experienced hunter" shot the lion with a bow and arrow, wounding the animal. They then stalked the lion for another 40 hours before finally despatching it with a rifle. If that's hunting then you can shove it. No skill or honour in this man's actions, totally indefensible.
