Anyone use it? I personally find it really good for the industry i am in (IT) but i feel its getting a bit "facebook esq" to a degree with too many people simply and blatantly plugging their product/service etc etc...

And after bad mouthing sales people on there, if anyone wants to linkIn to me, its Scott Roots. pretty sure i am the only one on there! (just checked, there are 3!! iam the only UK one though) Be warned though, i will try and sell you some networking equipment!!

Thoughts on LinkedIn then people... Useful or just another "social media" gimmick... Discuss...

I'm in IT industry also and getting a few job opportunities coming through LinkedIn. I get the impression some use it as bit of a vehicle for going on an ego trip - telling us how they got this fantastic new role/job; that new qualification; the other published white paper etc etc. Whatever...

I am on it but do not use it, I did however get a lead on a deal today from it that will make us some money so its worth being on it. The main problem is there are too many recuitment companies using it to hastle people to move jobs...

there are many many ways to source people rather than linkedin, it certainly is a useful tool and one of many.

I see a lot of people on there who just want to have 500+ connections!!!! I don't know 50 people that well never mind well over 500.

The ones who have 'looking for job opportunities/deals etc etc on their profile then hide all their contact info make me smile.

Plus a few are there because their company is there, they log on once in a blue moon to see the others in their company who are registered.

Yes, it's getting like face-ache with people whooping and virtual high fiving the latest boring piece of purulant guff their company has churned out..........
I've seen messages sent openly to their colleagues who sit in the same room...............sad!

hassle? a message through your email, and only if you allow messages or emails. YOU are about to make money out of it today! does your profile say open for job opportunities? bet it does!

Linkedin is one of the companies that are currently ruining the internet.

I wish they would just leave it be.

That's all I get dawn 'til dusk on my 3 work emails.

Why would I want to be linked in to quantity surveyors, medical professionals, double glazing salespeople.

???

I despair.

It might make some actual sense if they knew what they were doing.

I use it for the groups. I am a member of the UK accredited Six Sigma practitioners and it's a really valuable source of information and discussion - as well as generating opportunities for those that are looking in the industry.

It's like anything though, it will be as good or as bad as you choose to make it.

I am into IT consulting, LinkedIn is a very useful tool. In our industry, networking is key, LinkedIn is probably the best when it comes to network both within my firm as well as the wider industry. It is also useful for recruiters to have a look at your profile before they reach out. Think of it as your 'personal marketing literature'. I always look up the LinkedIn profile of anyone I am trying to recruit and vice-versa.
Agree, with the stmt that there are too many people that use LinkedIn like Facebook. My top tip: Facebook is private & keep it locked down, while LinkedIn is business, stay open at all time...
