Limiting club length to 46 inches

People worry about courses needing to be lengthened to keep up with the modern game, I think they should put a maximum of 7,000 yards on all courses and just go with it.

Scores might be ridiculous but so what.

The game isn't the same as it was so why worry about the scoring records from the past; 40 under par to win The Open, why not?

If people don't like the idea of 40 under par winning a major then extend the yardage boundaries for pars:
0 to 325 yards is a par 3
326 to 650 yards is a par 4
Par 5s are a concept from the past.

Realistically, in stroke play par is irrelevant. It's how many shots you have taken over the round(s) that counts, not how many below/above par you are. How about in pro comps doing away with the concept of par completely, do away with the concept of birdies, eagles etc. Just show the lengths of each hole and say "There you are. That's the course. Just play it as best you can and the player with the least shots wins" . Oh. Hang on a minute ...

This is true but giving a player's score relative to par is a very easy way of indicating how they're fairing in the competition and comparing it against others, eg 4 under par after 15 holes.

If they were to say "Player A is on 56 after 15 holes" then it isn't so easy to quickly grasp how they're playing as you need to know a load of information about the holes played and their lengths etc.

If they were to say "Player A is on 56 after 15 holes" then it isn't so easy to quickly grasp how they're playing as you need to know a load of information about the holes played and their lengths etc.

You'd have to list it by average number of shots per hole. "Dustin Johnson is in the lead with 3.66 after the front nine"

Spoke to Ben Mason yesterday, used to play on European Tour and now coaching. Said he's always used a 44.5 inch driver and doesn't know anyone who uses 46 or never been asked to fit anyone into something longer. Is a good friend of Jigger Thomson and said that was the only tricky bit, otherwise just a non story
