I haven’t been a member of a club fir about 5 years due to family and work. Due to a house move and family being a little more self sufficient I’m hoping to join somewhere next April.

My present game is okay however I want to use the winter to try and get back the consistency I had when playing regularly. My usual shot shape is a gentle fade (even with 3 wood) however my driver can veer wildly from gentle fade to full blown slice.

Last week I decided to have a lesson to start the process and to also try and give me something to work on with the driver. Anyway, he was generally happy with my swing and the only thing he asked me to do was to address the ball with the toe of the driver level with the ball rather than the ball sitting central in the face. The lesson went well and I’ve played twice since and I’ve never driven it so well.

I’ve had these moments in the past where I think I’ve cracked it abs it turns out to be a false dawn. Now just waiting to see how long it takes for the magic to wear off!!

On today's performance I think I had a power cut. Some good enough stuff hitting balls at the club and on some holes over the weekend but not enough consistency at the moment. It'll come, or at least improve

I had (yet another) such moment only last week, after reading a post on here.

I had always been mindful that a strong grip with my left (top) hand was not a good thing, but have spent years largely ignoring the position of my right hand. In short, it was way too much beneath the club meaning my bad shot was a huge block.

I’ve weakened my right hand slightly and the difference in my ball striking has been astonishing. Straighter, good distance and more consistent.

The problem is I’ll forget all about it in a few weeks and start tweaking another bit of my swing, claiming (yet another) lightbulb moment. And so the cycle will continue.

The single plane swing ... I don’t have one but it made me push my hand further away from me and make me get my weight on to my lead foot .. I have a reference point, I can return to it when I get lazy and the position slips. We will see if the light stays on as I have been in the dark for 5 years ..

Put a line with a sharpie on your glove to remind you where your right hand should be

The best lightbulb moment I had, probably about a year ago, was stop caring so much. I hit loads more good shots when I stopped caring about hitting a bad shot. And I enjoyed the round more. Win win.
