I am still living in the dark ages - my phone is used for the occasional text and call - and that is it. I am on-line most of the time for my job so do everything else from the PC.
The modern phone is a computer. You can do loads of stuff with it, I am unlocking lots of great things on my present adventure from buying tram tickets to hiring electric scooter etc...
But the old boy in me will always tell the younger peops that a company phone extends your work hours, you need to find a way of closing work down after hours. You may think availability and quick response is respected, it is but it is also forgotten far quicker. I have been guilty of putting my work life ahead of my family life, I have had company calls and messages etc whilst on holiday and I have responded. The problem for me was a case of whilst the cats away the mice will play ... thankfully I no longer work for that organisation and I won’t be tolerant of that behaviour in my new organisation they can do it, but they will shoulder the blame.
Yeah same here it’s quite slyThe extension of work is probably the reason I detest a smartphone. I was joined at the hip with mine, including for emails. And a vivid memory was a gentle telling off for not taking it on holiday, and also from HID on our next holiday when I was involved in a conference call whilst sat by the pool.
Surely one app even yourself would say is useful.
Tee time app for my golf club ...
Or the golf clubs app to see results from the monthly comps ... handicaps etc also includes course info like trolly bans, pin positions for day ...
Or the top tracer app where you can scan a code at any top tracer range and it loads your profile and stores all your data from your range session
Banking is so useful for sending money to the correct place. Paying mates for things. Cash is outdated as are cheques .. however if I do get s cheque from old people or outdated companies I can cash them in on my banking app no need to go down the bank. Or have a video meeting with a bank manager rather than having to go down.
TV so I can watch TV on my phone on trains or when bored
Video calling is brilliant and during covid has been great way of seeing friends or keeping in touch.. weekly video calls with my mum and my daughter so she can see her nan
The world is changing . Either adapt or get left behind
We have a club app and I have HOwdidIDo so can log on and book times. I think you nailed it and life is changing. I am certainly not in the same league as you but have my music via spotify, several radio apps, news and sport, banking, a short game app and tempo app for my golf and other bits and pieces. I can also view my work rota and that of both the doctors and consultants and the nurses so know when people are about should I need to contact them. Far better than sending an email and then finding out they are rostered off for a few days or have leave and if they are on nights I can make sure I catch them during morning handover.Surely one app even yourself would say is useful.

Fair comment, I feel that everyone should keep up with popular technology though, the mainstream stuff will be the least difficult to take up. There is nothing more frustrating than trying to learn something from scratch.Or follow the path that suits you, whether that involves the mobile or not. You're only being left behind if you choose to enter the race.

Some of the Apps etc on the phone are useful and bring a real benefit to people’s like - Mobile banking a key one. But there are some that just breed laziness- turning lights off ? Just stand up and walk to it , same with heating , plugs etc - it’s allowing people to sit on their backside. They maybe smart phones but they have the potential to make people become far to dependent on them.I take your point but I'd be more inclined to get involved with it if it wasn't't for the attitude of some, turning it into a peeing contest about how much of their life they can run via a mobile phone. As others have said, I can switch on lights using the switch on the wall, my thermostat takes care of my central heating and I just prefer, having large hands and diminishing close vision, to use a laptop than a phone for most actions. I can use the phone if I absolutely have to, but by and large I choose not to join the race.
As far as understanding technology goes, I wish most people had a greater knowledge of how their cars work as that is more likely to impact me, quite literally, than what they choose to do with their phone.

Yes and no, our light switches are poorly located for the living room. The door opens and blocks it
I set it up so when we have our hands full with the kids we can just turn on via voice
Plus the switches can still be used when walking past if you choose
I have My door bell set so when someone presses it the porch light comes on for 3 mins
It just stops delivery drivers buggering off
And one day they will develop intelligence, they will come to life and start running our lives rather than complementing them.
One day they will forge a plan
The next day the lights will go out and they won't come back on
These handheld devices will power up the industrial might of the world and create machines with only only one thought.

Personally I'd get the chisels out and re-hang the door on the other side of the frame, or relocate the light switch, whichever works better, but I suppose if you can't or won't do that then you'd need an app.
Unless you're in the living room.![]()

Aye its mustardI did look into moving the switch but my walls are rock hard. It would be more work than it's worth. The door is also a no go. We had the loft done over winter and the door was replaced
Can't change the way it swings as in it goes into living room can't go out because our arches are built into the walls.. the builder had to pack the door frame out with pine wood to fit the fire door because it would have been s complete re plaster job for the sake of even fitting the doors to existing frames.
Same with turning the door to open inwards the other way it would open onto another door that's the under stairs cupboard

As u can see you have to walk round the door to get to the switch and that door there is in way to open other way
However that pic is old as that's the old door
Seemed a bit far fetched for a documentary. And one day they will develop intelligence, they will come to life and start running our lives rather than complementing them.
