Life's oddities - mobile phones

A mobile is simply your life in a pocket sized device. It does everything now and aside from speaking to the wife that's about the only call I make. Everything else is done via apps or on the phone from mails to paying at checkouts

Exactly. Apps are everything now.

On my home page I've got tones of them

Weather app to check for golf

Google maps (use as sat Nav before I changed cars)

Have golf and football folders with betting apps and gamegolf etc apps

Banking folder

Streaming TV folder

Shopping folder

Social media folder

Video call to the wife button so I can say goodnight to my daughter and she can see me.

Car folder has all the insurance etc apps

And my fav folder the home folder

Ovo app check the energy usage if needed
Hive to control my heating
Burglar alarm app
CCTV app
Back up hardrive app for my cloud storage that's actually in my house
Pharmacy app to get my meds
Ring app for the doorbell
Baby cam app for checking in on the daughter at work or when she at nans we can see how she napping
Doctors app can book appointments
WiFi app to control my WiFi at home
And the best app the Alexa app.. control the lights , TV, smart plugs to turn the fans on,

Calling people is the last thing a mobile is for now.

And if you lose it you're screwed!

Each app has a username which I can log on from another phone so I can replace it within a few hours if needed

Can control locally using my Alexa device

It just seems to me that you have apps for the sake of having them. From your list I don't have any need for Banking, TV, shopping, video calling, car folder and none of your Home folder apps. Why do you need them? Without listing them there isn't one that I need.

Why is it a question of need? All of them make life easier. Yes you could cope without them but why bother? Why wouldn't you want to be able to all of those tasks from one small device that fits in your pocket so is always handy?

That's surely an individual case by case thing, you may not need them but they may simply bring him peace of mind knowing that info is all readily available should it be needed in emergency or merely convenience.

My own phone is used probably fairly similar and its more about convenience.

I use have 2 bank accounts so have their apps which is much more convenient to me than online, phone or branch banking. Plus I use my phone to pay for things rather than my card as my apps link to my cards.

All email work and personal. TV apps that allow me to stream C4, BBC, Disney+, Amazon etc for when I'm away from home. Social media, maps, games even have the Nero app so I can order & pay for my coffee to save queuing. Then there's whatsapp for video calls with the kids and family. Use is for golf GPS as well very handy and saves buying another device.

Others my not need any of these but they all make my life simpler, easier and mire convenient. It occasionally makes calls as well oh and I can also do all these things from my watch as well with the one exception being video calls. Is that needed no but again when I'm working makes life much simpler, plus if i go out for a long run or to golf im contactable in emergency without the need if my phone on me.

Banking is so useful for sending money to the correct place. Paying mates for things. Cash is outdated as are cheques .. however if I do get s cheque from old people or outdated companies I can cash them in on my banking app no need to go down the bank. Or have a video meeting with a bank manager rather than having to go down.

TV so I can watch TV on my phone on trains or when bored

Video calling is brilliant and during covid has been great way of seeing friends or keeping in touch.. weekly video calls with my mum and my daughter so she can see her nan

The world is changing . Either adapt or get left behind

Plus the Alexa ask instantly button .. at 05:00 when I get up for an early shift I can press it... Say good morning and ..

Landing light goes blue so it doesn't wake anyone

Hallway lights go on

Living lights go on

Kitchen lights go on

Also can set random routines for the lights so when your away it looks like somebody is in but it's not a timer that can be followed

This all way beyond me. I can get up and switch a light on without using a phone. I don't commute so don't need to watch TV, but wouldn't if I did, and wouldn't trust internet banking.

It's more secure than you think. By a long way.

Car folder for example btw can pay for parking on my phone so I don't have to carry change. Can extend remotely if Ive underestimated how long I wanted to park for

Can go shopping without a bank card just need to tap my phone. Which is safer than contactless as it doesn't activate the pay system unless authorised by code or finger print where as somebody could nick your card and tap it

My DPD app another useful example. Ordered a cotbed .. they said would be here yesterday but I'm nights and my wife can't be lugging it into the house .. 3 clicks on there and it's arranged for next week when I'm about to bring it in

Shift calender another useful app. Input my roster in there on a 33 week rolling pattern so if asked s date in future I can tell my wife what shift I'm on or if I'm off.

Life has changed dramatically.

Surely one app even yourself would say is useful.

Tee time app for my golf club ...

Or the golf clubs app to see results from the monthly comps ... handicaps etc also includes course info like trolly bans, pin positions for day ...

Or the top tracer app where you can scan a code at any top tracer range and it loads your profile and stores all your data from your range session

Some people still travel using horse and cart because cars are too complicated to drive ?‍♂️
Its just progress isn't it?
I agree about people on their phones a lot when out and about though. I often see groups of young lads in premier inns with their faces stuck in their devices, not even sharing a word, I guess it must be a generational thing.

On the other hand when their traveling alone it saves a lot on their dirty movie bill from the pay per view ?

I still have a couple of 6310i phones, best mobile ever made, used for footy away trips, very robust but still slimline enough for pockets, can go away for 3-4 days, no charger required, will last for a week making constant calls as there’s nothing else to drain the battery.

My other [main] phone currently is the 11Pro, great bit of kit, amazing camera, longest battery usage I’ve had in a modern phone for years, got 10 screen pages full of apps (114) that I use for social, personal & business, all the screen pages are grouped so everything is batched, finance on 1 page, golf on another, TV & streaming etc.

Need to look into regular back up options as scared to death of loosing what’s on it, mainly contacts & numbers, although I suppose it’s married to my iPad and laptop ?‍♂️

iCloud back up every night of the basics?
Contacts and numbers

Mine are all in Google.. Google drive is so useful all my photos, numbers etc in there

The modern phone is a computer. You can do loads of stuff with it, I am unlocking lots of great things on my present adventure from buying tram tickets to hiring electric scooter etc...
But the old boy in me will always tell the younger peops that a company phone extends your work hours, you need to find a way of closing work down after hours. You may think availability and quick response is respected, it is but it is also forgotten far quicker. I have been guilty of putting my work life ahead of my family life, I have had company calls and messages etc whilst on holiday and I have responded. The problem for me was a case of whilst the cats away the mice will play ... thankfully I no longer work for that organisation and I won’t be tolerant of that behaviour in my new organisation they can do it, but they will shoulder the blame.
