Had my 3rd lesson last night, things seem to be progressing well

My pro is very happy with my posture and address positions, the only thing he wants me to look at is lowering my hands a little, but not much.

He's happy with the positions I hit through the takeaway, keeping the club infront of me and getting to a good position at the top.

Last nights lessoon was the transition and starting down.

I know from previous videos of my swing I have a slight throw at the top. This is where he wants to start. He basically wants me to start my swing from the ground up, not the top down. From the top he wants me to start down by turning my hips, keeping my right elbow closer and lowering my right shoulder. His words were "Right sholder down, right elbow in". At this point of the the swing the arms are passive.

I cannot stress how different this feels to what I used to do. I feel, almost, cramped through the down swing. Having said that, the first ball I hit came out of the middle, hopefully a good omen.

When ever I learn something, I try and look for a feeling when I'm doing it right to try and replicate. I'm struggling with this one to be honest.

When I first started lessons 6 weeks ago, everything the pro changed felt wrong, although it was clearly right. I've trusted him and implimented the changes, practiced, pretty much daily and my back swing is a lot more, what I would consider more, not text book, but looks correct on video. He's very happy, so I'm happy

I presume working on a change to the downswing will be no different? Just a case of practice, practice, practice and trust what I have been shown is correct.

Here's hoping anyway :D

Good update Gareth.

Reading the updates from yourself and Kid2 definitely have me thinking that I should abandon the self teaching and go and get some help.

Any further vids?

Nil, non, nowt. I'm not interested in videoing it unless it's my pro filming it for analysis or someone catches my unawares

Are you managing to score OK-ish throughout this new learning process?

I have no idea, I haven't had a round in 3 weeks due to snow  Should be playing the weekend though

Still enjoying it?

Very much so. The way I look at I plan on playing this game for a long, long time so I would rather learn to do it right and take my time doing it.

Marathon not a sprint and all that. I'm not after a quick fix :D

The things he is correcting I could never have spotted myself.

As an example, I cannot 'feel' myself throw the club at the top, only a small throw mind, but he spotted it straight away.

It's the way forward. Just find a good pro.

Amen to that!!!

Great to hear that it's going so well. Looking forward to reading about your scoring improving as a result

Out of curiosity Gareth ois the focus going to be exclusively on your swing or are you turning your attention to your short game nex/doing it at the same timet?

gareth - do you not think it would be wise to record your swing when practising to make sure you are doing what you should be doing. as im sure you are aware that feel and real are two different things. just so you avoid ingraining the wrong move.

just a thought!

Good update Gareth. Sounds like you've got the right attitude to the changes and are staying positive.

I've highlighted a bit that I found interesting, as my pro got me to do the same thing last year, albeit for different reasons. I was starting the downswing by throwing my hips left and forward (although I didn't realise that), which threw me all out of balance and led to a litany of bad shots. So now, when I start the downswing, all I think about is turning the hips. Everything else falls in behind that.

If you need to find a 'feeling' to replicate it, my pro told me to practice with an imaginary club and with my back (well, my backside) against a wall. When I turn through the ball, I shouldn't lose contact with the wall. I appreciate that this may be a solution to a problem that you don't have, but it may help to get you feeling that the turn is working properly.

Oh, and you're right, the only way to embed the change is to practise practise practise. For a couple of months after the lesson, all I heard from HID was "Would you please stop rubbing your arse against the wall!"

My short game is/was pretty good. I want to get my swing, in the main, sorted first, that's my priority. My pro did actully say next lesson we may look at some short game but,to be honest, I want this right first.

Sensible idea Gary

It's the initial movement more than anythng. Having seen my swing, my pro seems to think if I get that right (Initial movement) the rest will follow.

I may consider filming a swing every now and then just to see, but don't really plan on doing it regularly.

since the pro has shown you what to look for it makes sense that you should have a peek now and again. it certainly wouldnt hurt!

my advice, take 3 swings in one video. somtimes you can feel the eyes of the camera looking at you and you swing like a clampet on the first one! lol
