I was watching the women's Open on Friday and saw one of the Americans play the 18th.
She pulled her second shot towards the out of bounds fence left and got the signal that it was in fact out of bounds. She dropped another ball and played onto the green.
When she got to the fence, it turns out the ball was actually still in play (just) but because she didn't declare the second ball a provisional, the first ball was deemed to be out of play.
She took it very well but said "it was a lesson learned"
