Quick question.

Pal posted a video from women’s golf tour where the player was on the green and putted off the green, the ball ran into rough. She then had a bit of a nightmare finishing the hole.

I said she should have taken the stroke and distance option and played again from the green.

My pal said that professional players can’t do that in a tournament and must play the ball as it lies.

Is he right or am I right?

Thanks.

You are right

You are right.

Such a prohibition would reuqire a Local Rule and I have never heard of such a thing. I have just checked a pro tour hard card and there is no such mention or prohibition in there.

I hope you had a healthy wager on it.

Didn't Woods(?) do that a few years back?

Can’t find any reference to that.
It may not have been Woods. But I do remember seeing a video of someone slightly overhitting and the ball run down the sloping green into the water. And their taking S&D.

It was Woods at the Masters a few years ago on the 13th, putted into Rays Creek and then just took S&D vs dropping out of the creek.

It was also the option that Mickelson could have taken at the US Open, but instead he chose to play a moving ball. Then said he knew it would be a penalty and implied he was doing something clever. Plonker.

Yeah, he was definitely having a tantrum over how quick the greens were, then concocted that explanation afterwards. 😄
