I was watching the women's Open on Friday and saw one of the Americans play the 18th.

She pulled her second shot towards the out of bounds fence left and got the signal that it was in fact out of bounds. She dropped another ball and played onto the green.

When she got to the fence, it turns out the ball was actually still in play (just) but because she didn't declare the second ball a provisional, the first ball was deemed to be out of play.

She took it very well but said "it was a lesson learned"

Have you learned any lessons the hard way?

I'm sure I have Bob, I just can't think of one right now. I did however learn a lesson at the expense of a friend.

Not so long ago a friend of mine played a blinder in a club trophy, would have won it by a country mile........... If he'd remembered to sign his card

After this I always make sure my card is signed before submitting it.

Ive only been doing this game competitively for a year, I have learnt pretty much everything the hard way!

Most of it has stuck though...

I saw that interview though I had a different reaction to it - mine was ' how in hell have you made it to a professional tour without knowing that'.

more to the point though was when Hazel showed her the clips of the incident. frame 1 - ball is tucked up beside a fence post; frame 2 - ball is a good 6 inches inside the fence.

I wonder just how often the galleries provide a helping nudge in pro comps?

Catriona Matthew played a Provo today after doing the same thing. The Marshall on the spot was clearly indicating that the ball was OB but she took a Provo just in case.

Played in one of the adlults events at my old club while still a junior but went out in the morning and played the loop of 1-4 and 18 as I was there hours before my tee time. Didn't know about not playing the course before a comp. Duly wnet out and won it and got DQ'd
