Given the choice would you buy IRONS that allow you to hit the ball further or would you simply like to be able to hit your own irons PROPERLY?

I already hit my own and any irons I try properly;)............however consistency is a different matter:rolleyes:

As far as my irons go I am not a big hitter (7i is 150 max) but I do have reasonable accuracy with them. I wouldn't sacrifice that accuracy for any amount of additional distance.
As long as you know how far your own irons go you can always plan out the next shot in advance.

Are they not one and the same James? Meaning a better strike will deliver better distance?

As per the saying "Hit it better, not harder".

Or are you taking jacked lofts and longer shafts?

In which case the latter.

Having had a proper fit and some lessons, the strike has improved and as a result the distance has too. I think this will be true for most in that a decent strike will lead to better distance.

Accuracy is a different question... ;)

I would rather be consistent and find the sweet spot all the time than lash at it and the result be hit and miss...

Ideally the new longer irons that I could also hit properly. However, given that isn't what you are asking, I'd take hitting mine properly every time as that would lead to better consistency and distance control

I hit my irons ok if not always long. I get a reasonable quility of strike at the moment. I could prob go to more forgiving clubs and gain a few extra yards. But i like my current set and not really thought about changing them at the moment.

I go for looks and feel rather than distance.

Consistency is key in golf, if you can't get a consistent strike then you'll struggle to improve, but consistently good strikes will give you a better notion about what kind of shot you can hit and when you can do it. Instead of just hit & hope.

*Not saying that you're a poor player specifically, but just generally for everyone*

apart from currently playing my 7i as 132yds I concur with everything in your post!

I have very little dispersion on my irons now - I don't use them for length, I use them to make my putts easier :)

Would love a cleaner strike. I scored so-so last time out with a decent amount of pars but afterwards I couldn't think of one hole where I hit every shot clean.

Hitting any good shot feels great but my favourite part of golf is hitting an iron shot to the green and watching it pull up pretty quick.
Or even come back towards me occasionally (even if it landed 10 yards short of the hole :D )

Amazing how we could all pretty much do with hitting the ball better yet we tend to focus on what clubs we have more than why we don't make good contact with the ball.... ie: work on our swings.

Just reading the thread about the rocketballz irons makes me wonder what the point is of having irons that go further (driver - sure, we need something that's going to get us down the fairway).

If I gave you a 9-iron that went 190yds would it make your game any better?..... it probably wouldn't if you still couldn't hit the ball, and more to the point you'd just end up having to carry 6 wedges to fill in all those shorter yardages.

ball striking for me

mine as bad as it was has actually got worse, losing at least one club in the irons off the tee and upto 2 on the fairway, that was before the cold weather came so not just time of year related.

Gonna move to s&t as I hear its the dogs danglies for ball striking & distance ;)
