Hi Guys,

Now it's getting to the winter months and the wind starts to pick up, I tend to find that i'm losing more balls. Now at the moment I use Pro V1s and I was wondering if there was a significant difference in the performance of lake balls and whether it was worth buying some for the winter months just so when I do lose a ball it's not such a blow as a brand new Pro V would be at £3 a pop.

Lake balls lack distance and feel. You can lose up to ten metres with a lake ball compared to pro v1s. I would suggest Pinnacle gold fx long/soft. probably the cheapest good quality ball. Its been recommended by Golf Monthly twice and I personally use them. Lake balls are best used for practice.

The subject of lake balls (and refurbished) comes up quite often. The trouble with lake balls in particular is that they degenerate after being in water and there is no consistency between each ball. In my opinion they are not worth the money except to use as practice balls and the money would be better spent on a dozen new balls, especially as there are loads of middle of the range makes to choose from which will give fair amounts of both distance and spin

Don't buy refurbished balls whatever you do as they are just given a new lick of paint and could have easily lost everything that makes a golf ball decent. Buy non refurbished balls and you get what you see. They are balls that are lost having not been damaged or used a lot hence no need to refurbish them. just the odd mark but all the playability of a brand new ball of that make/type.

I agree with what has been said. My missus gave me a dozen lake balls last Xmas and you notice the difference off the tee (in my case 20 or 30 metres). Don't know what the long hitters must think about these balls. Avoid them!

Certainly in the winter you're better off with new AD333 or NXT tour or TM Burner balls. Even Cally HX Hot. They still give decent performance and you may even hit it further. Don't forget, when the fairways get really wet you won't get much run so carry is all important.

Lake balls or refurbs are only really any good for practice

I've just switched to NXT tour from pro v1 for the winter. However I went to the practice ground after work and just used some practice balls.

What a difference in each ball. I didn't enjoy it at all and it even felt like a waste of time. The cheap hard balls that I used to practice with felt horrible.

I'm definatley going to practice with the same balls I play with from now on. It has however taken me a while to notice this.....not sure why today was different. Maybe its just me!!!
