You have summed it up in five words "hope they are good quality". You don't know wht you are getting for your money. I'm not picking you out specifically and no offence meant. If you are happy using lake balls then that is fine.

I completely see where you are coming from regarding using the same ball for practice (repitition of feel and distance etc).

Personally I use most types of Titleist (ideally Pro V) but in winter I'll use a harder ball like the NXT. I'll also use Callaway HX etc and all I do is once the ball is three or four rounds old (providing I keep it that long) I'll put it in the practice bag. If I've been hitting more wood than fairway I'll usually look at the ball at the end of the round and if it is badly scuffed consign it to practice ball heaven there and then. It really is amazing how quickly you can build up a bag of top quality balls to use to improve

Well $8 per time and say 3-4 times a year is 20-30 so yes a saving, but as they say ma brass tha brains. I guess each to their own, as I don't feel the need for lessons or a free sleve or glove I would prefer the cash in my pocket all the same.

i can barely get a round out of a ball, which is why i dont use a new pro v for a practice round.

i'll let you know what the lake balls are like (i dont think they have really been in a lake btw)

if they are no good, i will try some mid priced balls. maybe playing the same ball, in the same condition will take a couple of shots off me - i have never done it before

I should be soon. And yeah i will use him if he sells 333's. As pointed out by you and others, i would like to support the pro/club in anyway i can. If that means i may have too pay a couple of quid more for new balls than lake balls i will. On the other hand, i dunno why pro's dont stock lake balls, or do they?

My pro shop stock a 'cheap' range of balls that are not actually advertised as lake balls but could be these or refurbs. The trouble is these 'cheap' balls aren't - not at 75p each.
And AG is about 10 minutes down the road.

Am I the only one who thinks that it's not yet worth spending money on a quality ball when all I'm going to do is lash it into the woods fairly soon?

On other hand, last time I played, t'was with a decent ball (PTS SoLo) I'd got as a freebie and me & it stayed friends all the way round. Was that because I was playing better, or because I was playing with a better ball?

I just like to start a round with a new golf ball. No idea why but it just seems right. At least the ball is normally lasting a whole round now. After that it goes into the bag ready to take over when I do lost one. Something just seems right about standing on the first tee looking down on a shiny new ball. Still only use mid priced balls though, cannot justify the cost of Pro Vs etc and am sure that the increased spin would actually have a detrimental effect on parts of my game.

I used to use lake balls exclusively, 50 for £10 seemed a good deal when feeding demanding lake gods (and we have a lot of them!). Then I started to think that using the same type of ball would eliminate one variable but it didn't make a lot of difference, possibly because I opted for the wrong one; Wilson Deep Red - takes all the spin you can give it!
Now I tend to use 'decent' but reasonably priced balls - Warbirds over the winter but still to decide for the summer (got some to try, AD333's I won in Spain and some NXT's from those nice people at GM, plus some new Niklaus that seem to work) and like GB, it's nice to start a round with a clean shiny ball.

If you are loosing alot of balls per round then there isnt really much point in paying out for new or decent ones. I dont tend to loose many now so thats why i have gone with the ad333's and that is all i will use. Even when i find pro v1's i dont use em because i want to build a consistent feel with 1 ball. And its working. Nothing like a new ball really is there. But i aint playing in comps yet so wont buy them. When i do.. i will.

I generally throw a new box of AD333s in the bag and loose about 2 at most a round if that, usually its when I get to a hole on the back nine when I think "hey I havent lost a ball today!" then one goes astray. When I am below twelve I pop another sleve in and play the ones I have, I don't think the AD333 marks that bad and I have had some in the bag which have been there months and are just dirty. I totally rate them and use no other ball on the course.

They do seem to hold up better than callaways when they bounce of trees. Shame they dont float!

No water on my home course just blood hundreds of trees and dog walkers ;) I wonder if I hit on and the ball stayed on either the dog or walker if I had to take a penalty?

Nope, no penalty - you just replace the ball on the spot where it hit the dog/walker. If the ball disappears off into the distance with them, then you substitute another ball .
