You have summed it up in five words "hope they are good quality". You don't know wht you are getting for your money. I'm not picking you out specifically and no offence meant. If you are happy using lake balls then that is fine.
I completely see where you are coming from regarding using the same ball for practice (repitition of feel and distance etc).
Personally I use most types of Titleist (ideally Pro V) but in winter I'll use a harder ball like the NXT. I'll also use Callaway HX etc and all I do is once the ball is three or four rounds old (providing I keep it that long) I'll put it in the practice bag. If I've been hitting more wood than fairway I'll usually look at the ball at the end of the round and if it is badly scuffed consign it to practice ball heaven there and then. It really is amazing how quickly you can build up a bag of top quality balls to use to improve
