Knowing where to miss..

I am still getting to know my new course, but soon learning where I can afford to miss the fairway with least amount of punishment. I narturally draw the ball, so always bear that in mind. I still need to learn more about the greens, i.e using the banks around them to make the green easier to hit, I seem to be under hitting alot of approaches, as some greens are raised.

Its easy to know where to miss and despite having some sort of game plan I often still find myself going for the impossible or certainly risky shot instead of the percentage.

Golf is a crazy game.

I've put my ball behind every tree possible during the last 6 months or so and think I know the parts of the course that are best avoided, but that doesn't mean by ball always behaves. Some of the places I find myself in can only be dealt with by laughing. It's that or snapped clubs!

bail out left of 6 (as seen on bogey hole thread) if my drive is not long or is into the wind. its a lost ball if it goes into bushes all the way up the right.

i always miss left on 4 as right side protected by 3 deep bunkers. left is safe.

Have to admit I have never really thought about where is best to miss? To me it just sounds like a lot of negativity as you are admitting I am going to miss this but where should I put it instead. I always try and think right this is the club and I want to put it there. If its something like between clubs where there is water short then that seems obvious to go for the longer club.

Should it be something I think about?

i sometimes do it just to be on the safe side. these holes 4 and 6 are early in the round and low stroke index. i like to get them out of the way without too much trouble. a bogey is not too bad. sometimes i can get an up and down for par. this is not the case all the time although if im in a comp and off to a reasonable start then ill keep it in mind.

Im with Homer......My ball flight patterns are nowhere near reliable enough for me to be able to know where to miss......

If it were that reliable id be hitting plenty more GIR's. :)

what i mean is. for example on 4 as mentioned. if the flag is on right side of green then ill want to miss (if i do) on the left side. it means i have some green to work with for the 3rd shot. if i miss to the right. ill have to flop over bunkers with little green to work with.

Even the pro's miss. But I can guarantee they know where to miss and where to not.

The reason I posted this was on saturday I played with two members I've not played with before. It was a texas scramble on solid frozen fairways/greens.
On each par3 these two where trying to hit greens, even after me telling them multiple times not to aim for the green as it was utterly useless. I made sure I played last on each par3, we used my shot on every par3. Why? because I didn't aim for the greens but for places I knew we could get up and down for par.
