Afternoon guys,
My lass won't even humour me talking about it so i've come to you! Had a few problems at home so todays round was the first for 3 weeks. Wasn't expecting much but i purchased 3 months of Sky sports recently so i've still had a fix of golf. Watching the effortless swings amazes me. I went out today with the aim of swinging slow and steady the entire round and letting the clubs do the work... It worked !!!! Ended with a personal best of 46 points and even left some out there. Started with a bit of a faster swing and a lost ball straight off the first, ending with a blob. Went on to birdie the next and continued with a steady round from start to finish. There was only 5 of us this morning and I got drawn with one of the older lads (72) who played off 19. His swing was just so slow and steady and he really helped keep me on track and remind me to slow it down. I use hybrid off the tee and had a couple of tee shots i managed to top no more than 30 yards trying to swing too fast but followed them up with a 200yard+ straight shot when i slowed it right down again. To make me even happier, we go back to summer golf next week! Back to the white tees and stopping these old boys teeing up in the fairway so they can hit driver, driver, wedge to the longer holes. i expect scoring to drop considerably the next few weeks !

What I have taken from today is KISS (Keep it slow stupid!)

Anyone else similar to this? On a negative, my scorecard holder has dropped to bits !! Has anyone got any spares lying about or any recommendations for one that will last more than 3 rounds!?

Most of my mishits come from swinging too fast, so like you I need to try and keep it slow. My last lesson was about generating speed from rotating the shoulders and not from swinging hard. My driving has been much better, but still need to work on the irons.

I always find that when I'm actively trying to slow it down I slow it down too much and end up with a 30 yard bouncing ball off the tee lol

Ernie Els is a good mental image to have. Easy swing, great timing, effortless power.

As for your scorecard holder, buy yourself a decent one you tight git 😜

Yes ! Ernie is a great image to have in the head. Just watched a few youtube swings.

Just read the scorecard part back and seen that it reads that i'm asking for one !:oops: Oops! not the case at all !! :ROFLMAO: I know some people that buy them when they are cheap or own their own business that sells them. No one seems to have any decent ones in stock at the minute so was open to suggestions (y)

My swing gets hugely out of sink if I swing to fast. Ever since I was a kid I was fascinated with lazy tempo swings Freddie Couples being my favourite to emulate as a young teenager. Ever since then it's been my go to tempo, as a result I've always had a lazy rhythm to my swing and I find I generate more power that way to. My bad shots normally always come from my swing quicker, so I always try to be lazy in my swing and it works for me.

This is 100% me. The faster and harder I swing the worse I play. Slower works best for me but blimey it's a fight and I often lose the battle. Put me into a headwind or hitting up a hill and the desire to swing faster wins out nearly every time 😢😠

I go for Monty when I'm trying to swing slowly. I saw him live once and he had a very gentle and easy swing. No doubt the clubhead speed was fast but the illusion was much slower. Els's swing is fabulous but for whatever reason it is Monty's that sticks in my head.

have to admit that my backswing can be wayyyyy too fast and this ends up with poor shots as a result.
i have to keep reminding myself you dont hit the ball on the backswing.

Watch Fred Couples if you want to see a tempo.
Make your own , bit of sticky back plastic or wallpaper on a stiff card.

Monty always had good tempo and a very repeatable effective action. Watch him live a few times back in the 90s, don't think I ever saw a change in his tempo and I never saw him miss a fairway when I saw him live.

.
This is everytime for me simply the best golf swing I've seen, for tempo and style.

I find I have issues if I swing too fast and don't give myself time to clear out the way, the hips slide and it isn't great. However if I over slow it down and get too deliberate it gets out of sync and so I have to work hard to find an optimum speed. Often it'll feel good on the range and then go too fast/deliberate on the course. One of many issues I have

You need to swing at a pace to suit your shafts.
So swing speed of 80 mph fitted into certain shafts if you then swing at 90mph or slow to 70 mph the shaft loads differently to the fitted speed.
So results will be up and down.

I agree with Bob, I find if I try and swing slow, it causes confusion in the body, and results in a lot of decelerated swings, which can be just as destructive as too fast.
Definitely agree. It's an issue I've suffered a lot with and also with pitching where I've not always trusted my technique and so tried to be slow and deliberate and as you say caused confusion between brain and body and either massively decelerated (fat) or got really worried it wouldn't go the distance and so twitchy at the ball (thin). Like my full swing, I have my own optimum speed for pitching and when I am swinging at that speed my distance control and proximity is usually very good. It's all about finding the right timing I think for me. Mind you anyone that has seen me dance (Pathetic Shark???) will no that rhythm and tempo aren't things I am naturally blessed with

Yeah, my swing is not overly fast either so I don't try to make it that way. Often my worst shots are when I think "right I really need to give it everything here" and try and hit it too hard, swing too fast, end up fatting it or something. It's always better to go a club up and keep it simple and easy. It's particularly true off the tee, two of my mates have fast swings and longer drives then me, so once in a while I'm tempted to try and give it more speed, and often that will result in a worse drive with more slice, whereas if I swing within myself all the way round I find fairways.

Smooth is what is in my head at the moment.

If i swing to slow I seem to lose all of my rhythm and don't commit to the swing.

If i swing to fast I get fast and jerky at the top and also lose my rhythm.

Smooth yet committed swing and not jerky from the take away or the top.
