Barassie is a golf course that I've been critical of in the past. I enjoyed the "old" Barassie, the original layout was superb, a real joy. Barassie built 9 new holes on good links land down towards Dundonald which dramatically increased the length of the course and ultimately kept Open qualifying at Barassie.

Today JJF69 and myself headed to Barassie for a "feel" of the place before our competition on Monday and were joined by Andy McIntyre. It was a bright and breezy day on the links making clubing very very difficult. A good start saw me on the railway line off the first tee and reaching for a second ball! A fairly gentle par 5 start is soon forgotten when the course immediately shows its teeth and starts to bite from the second onwards. The 2nd and 3rd holes are tough par 4's before you walk about 7 miles to the new part of the course and a simply superb par 3 awaits, a real tough par 3 with great views out to the isle of Arran.

At this point of the review I have to own up and admit that I got it wrong, the new holes are not "a long boring slog" that I previously stated. They are not only very tough, they are very good holes that not only challenge with their length but also make you think about position and strategy. I really enjoyed the new 9 today and appreciated that they are infact dam fine holes. After the 12th you have an 8 mile walk back to the old part of the course where you are again faced with a challenging par 4. This is now my main grype, the distance between the old and new parts of the course.

The greens were good and true, if a little on the slow side but for October you cant really expect 12 on the stimp meter. Overall I really enjoyed the course today, its a very good layout and tough. The 3 club wind didn't make for an easy day but it was enjoyable.

Barassie is doing a Sunday - Friday £100 four ball deal. My advice is grab it as I'm sure you will enjoy it.
