Hi all,

I'm new to the forum, I signed up today and thought I'd say hello.

I've been playing golf seriously now for about 3 months so very new to the game. I think I've resigned myself to the fact that I'll never play football again (I'm 30 this year) so I'm taking up Golf. I have myself some irons (X16s) which I find to be very solid and serve me well, a Callaway Big Bertha (my nemesis) and I've just upgraded my no-name putter (Pillage?.... don't laugh) to an Odyssey White Ice #3 (my old putter was a complete nightmare to use, no feedback at all and even less roll).

Having only played a few rounds with my Dad my handicap is around the 25 mark. Plenty of room for improvement :) . I've made an effort to get to the range and practice areas at least once a week and have definitely noticed an improvement in my putting and chipping already.

I've been reading through some of the threads here (particularly in the rules section) and just trying to sponge as much information in as I can about the game!

Anyway, just wanted to say hello to you all.

Thanks

David :)

Once you work out the rules could you let me know as I haven't got a scooby most of the time. Turns out from another post you can't take a wedge and a putter onto the green with you. Who knew?

Welcome along. Where do you play

I live in Essex. I've played a few rounds here and there, Woldingham in Croydon has been my favourite course so far. I've played the usual array of courses within a short driving distance from where I live but to be fair they're not much cop. At the moment I'd begrudge spending upwards of £30 for a round just due to my skill level. I tend to keep my eyes peeled for groupon deals!

The weather isn't putting me off (though Woldingham was very fresh!). I'm just trying to get myself to the range as much as possible to familiarise myself with the clubs. Still trying to get the basics down :) Hopefully by the spring I'll be at a level where I can really start to enjoy the game.

Rooter, of course, 30 isn't too old at all. However for me football was all about the social aspect. I left my old club when I moved away and since moving back I haven't got back into it. Golf provides much more of a challenge and at the moment I'm relishing it.

Thanks all for the replies.

Thank you for the warm welcome.

The cold weather doesn't put me off as such (althought Woldingham was a little bit fresh!). I'm really looking forward to the spring where hopefully I've improved my game enough to really enjoy the warmer weather.

I live in Essex. I've played the various courses on offer here but to be honest they're not brilliant. At the moment I'm in the position where I wouldn't pay upwards of £30 for a round, my skill level doesn't warrant it. I try and keep my eyes peeled for Groupon offers. The best course I've played so far is Woldingham in Croydon. A great course set in a valley.

Rooter - you're completely right. 30 isn't too old at all to still be playing football. For me football was very much about the socialisation. I moved away from Essex for a while and never got back into it when I returned for various reasons. I love the challenge golf is giving me at the moment, it's frustrating but can be incredibly rewarding at times. That feeling of dropping a shot dead on the green is enough to put a smile on my face everytime.

I'm still trying to cover the basics and familiarise my body with holding a club. The driver is still alien to me if I'm honest. I slice it nearly every single time! :( I'm just trying to get my irons in good shape, a decent tee shot and working on my chipping and putting.

One question for you all if I may. My Dad and I have been trying to figure out the best way of working out a fair handicap score for the both of us. I thought it was just your last 3 rounds added and divided by 3. However he seems to think there's more to it than that. We don't want anything too complicated and still want to keep hold of the fun factor (though I suspect that'll soon waiver as we improve). We follow golfing and local rules as best we can without penalising ourselves too much, otherwise it'll just get depressing. Any help would be great.

Thanks again for the comments

I think there are a few free handicap trackers on the net mate, I am sure someone will be along with the name of one soon. All you do then is enter your cards and it will give you your h/c.

Thanks. After reading a bit about it online it seems that the max you're allowed on a hole is a double-bogey. Taking that into consideration, it's not unheard of for me to hit sometimes 8's on a Par 4. That would mean I get given 2 shots and I would score a 6 on that hole.

With all that in mind. My total score is obviously going to be much lower. I feel that this is an unfair reflection on my actual ability and will make me sound better than I actually am!

Any views at all?
