Played this morning up at Newbiggin by the Sea, which is a dump of a town, but a cracking links course. Walked in to the clubhouse afterwards and there's the bold Jack sitting on his own by the door. I had heard he wasn't keeping great, and he did look very frail, but I had a lovely wee chat with him about the golf, He asked how I'd got on, and was telling me how he used to play, but had chucked it years ago.

Very boring story I know, but it made my day.

Not a boring story at all, the guy is a legend in English football. Nice to hear he made time to chat to you but then he comes across as the type of guy who would do that anyway :)

Memories of Big Jack...
Back in the day and Middlesbrough, managed by Jack, were drawn away at the mighty Wycombe Wanderers in the 3rd round of the FA Cup.
Middlesbrough were top of the, then, First Division and Wycombe were in the Isthmian League.
We held them to a 0-0 draw and even had a chance to sneak it at one stage.
About halfway through the 2nd half virtually the entire Wycombe support started singing Jackie Charlton's getting worried Jackie Charlton's getting worried...
He stood up and gave us a big (y)
Top Man

I saw him do an evening with at Blyth Spartans about 2000 or 2001. Fantastic stories and a lovely guy. Used to see him quite regularly in Ponteland and he did look quite frail last time.

I recognised him when I went in, said "hi, how are you doing?", and he just gave me this big smile and a wave. I vaguely remember hearing he had dementia, and thought "what a shame, he can't even speak".

Then as I came back from the bar, he said "hullo son, have you been playing? what's it like out there this morning?"

I was so made up that he wasn't anywhere near as bad as I had first thought.

Seen him a few times round and about. Last time was at Newcastle airport, he was in the same non moving Easyjet queue as me. We all had to suck it up but the slightly amusing thing was he was still a full head above everyone else in the queue. Perfect posture.

Never heard a bad word against him, don't want to if anyone intends to reply to this with a negative story. Seems a good bloke and I am pleased to hear he was still sharp today. Being in a club such as Newbiggin sounds very Jack Charlton, nothing grand about Newbiggin. He did look frail last time I saw him on tv but sadly that is life.

Dave, must have been feisty out there today. Hats off to you.

I heard his other brother (Not Bobby) talking on the radio about being picked for the England walking football team. He was the most modest person you could imagine and was so proud of Jack and Bobby - lovely family!

As a mad, lifelong Boro fan.....just wow! That Boro side he got promotion with....just wow!

He’ll always be a hero on Teesside.....just wow!

It was pretty blowy, proper links conditions! Enjoyed it though. Myself and a mate have joined for the winter.

Leatherhead v Wimbledon - 2nd round of the F.A.Cup in December 1976. Winners played Middlesbrough who Jack managed at the time. He sat in front of me and was chatting to myself and my grand-father most of the game. Really genuine nice person. Trouble is we lost 3-1 to the Dons and missed out on playing them.
