Hi all,

I've been playing a couple of years now and unofficially off 25 handicap. I've recently taken the plunge and joined a golf club.

I've only ever played golf as a friendly thing with my mates and have no idea what to expect.

Can anyone give me some helpful tips that would be useful to know for when I join!

Thanks

Just get stuck in to any comps and games you can. Get to know people at the club and you should be able to get a game most times. My first couple years at a club I didn't enter any comps as I didn't know anybody, and I regret that now as I love playing in the comps whenever I can and have met a lot of nice folk at the club and can often get a game whenever I turn up.

find out when the roll ups are and join in. Great way to get to know the friendlier people at the club and a great way to get a regular game.

I joined my club in March - my tip would be get stuck in, get your name down in comps and just meet people. If your club is as friendly as mine you meet new members all the time and they'll be happy to let you join there 2/3 ball and eventually build up a few different groups to play with. Loved every minute of my membership so far. If you fancy it get your name down for the rabbits team too, another great way to meet people of your standard too.

Ask the pro/similar when the roll up/swindle/casual games for 2-5 quid are and just turn up and introduce yourself. Often the people in them are the core of the club who play the most golf and know everyone. Play competitions as well to meet other members and swap contact details so you can arrange games if you get on with them

You forgot one crucial detail, which club?

Cuckfield!

We have quite a few clubs near me in Crawley, but they are either really expensive - or owned by Glendale/Crown golf etc. Cuckfield just felt like home - only played there once, but feels right for me at this stage.

The first thing you need to get on with is to get an official handicap. That is an essential to play in comps and roll-ups. You should be able to do your cards for initial handicap allocation while playing alongside roll-up players until you've done the necessary 3 cards.

Indeed.

I was asking about that yesterday! Going to do my first card next week.

Expect folks just like you - loving the game, it's frustrations and irritations. And no matter how long they have been playing getting just as bemused as you by the way you can play great one day and total rubbish the next. You'll discover that golf reveals the character imperfections in all of us - and that includes the two members who always play together and whinge and moan to each other - and swear and rejoice with each other - that you discover are a vicar and a chief of police.

Don't forget that golf is the great leveller. You'll find some in any club who'll seem to be the bees-knees; the main-men (and women); the 'bigger-uppers', but you'll also find that everyone else likes taking them down a peg or two.

Just get to know a few folk - and everything else will just follow without you having to try or worry.

Thanks for your advice.

Explain to your situation to the other guys in your game. Ask them to keep you right with rules and etiquette, where to stand where not to stand ETC. and tell them that you won't be offended being told.
Everybody started off feeling the same, so relax and don't try and melt it 300 yards . Hope you enjoy it , keep us posted.

Get stuck in. Ask the pro or secretaries when the roll ups go out, especially at weekends and look to perhaps get in with one of those. Usually great banter and a guaranteed game. Get your handicap sorted asap and then enter the comps. Find out if they are drawn or you have to find your own partners. Have fun and enjoy your new home

Cuckfield is a friendly enough place ,my club plays against them in a league ,always seem like a decent bunch and the course although not overly testing is fun to play .
