UK golf...should just do a contract with the Saudi's to ship in enough sand to coat every golf course with 1-2 feet of sand. Just do it (as Nike says). OK.....a horrible first year....but then the mud is gone/better. Sell your soul to the Saudi's of course.....I might be able to live with that.

The funny thing about what you are saying is that the sand in the bunkers at either where they were playing last week or Dubai is imported from England according to the commentators.

Probably too much salt in the local stuff.

I figured taking that much sand from UK sites would cause mayhem. Isn't a fair bit taken off-shore? Drop in the bucket for some dry countries......and for drainage I wouldn't think the sand quality would matter that much as long as it's not too fine of a grain. Jeez.....I can only imagine how much it would cost to just cover one golf course with a decent layer of sand.....

£12M, I understand, to sand-cap Loch Lomond GC. Also we have several members travelling from Harrogate to join up with numerous groups who make them welcome. Harrogate GC is the best course near you with a very large Senior's section..... have found them no more stuffy than most Golf Clubs...... our place is very much an exception to the rule.

The quality of sand is more important than you think. One of the big problems is getting sand with a lot of salt in which will kill the grass. We had a batch of sand delivered with a lot of a particular type of weed seed in it and now have a problem with that type of weed growing on the course and green which is not normally seen in our area.

The sand we use in our bunkers I believe comes form somewhere a couple of hundred miles away and it has to be remembered that a lot of the sand in the bunkers will end up on the greens. Hence my comment about salt - one batch of sand (from a different source) started to kill the grass between the bunker and the green.

Did another 18 holes of bog snorkelling yesterday and did me customary slide and fall over. This one was funny coz I never hurt me ankles or owt. But the trolley dragged me 6ft. I was bloody covered in mud and and soaked. though fortunately dried off on a Gorgeous day. It was amusing walking around the course as you could see places where folk had slipped and skidded.
I thought “ I wonder if the day will come where a golfer sues a course through injury caused by conditions”. ?

Played at Wike a couple of times before I retired (so....over 10 years ago). They were tearing the crap out of the parking lot and I think just putting in new building facilities. I liked the course if I have the correct one in my head....a lot narrower than what I am used to playing on. I haven't played Harrogate, but nobody I play with considers it the best course in the Harrogate area....better than Rudding from what I hear. We've had a number of Harrogate members switch over to Knaresborough. Wike seems to be invisible.....nobody I talk to even mentions it. Not very far away.....I wonder why?

£12m? probably more than I thought it would cost, but I have no clue what goes into doing it.

10 years ago it was a 'Goat track'...... there's been over £4M invested since then in improving the course, buildings & practice facilities (there's nowhere better in the area) & whilst it's rated as the easiest course in the area it means you're not going to get beaten-up by the course during adverse weather etc.

Ah, yes, error!!....... IMO Pannal GC would easily be the very best (though very bad in winter) but Harrogate, the best of the rest, though the enormous size of the Senior's section must bring issues over getting a game in their Teams & generally integrating with the main Club membership. I've played with our Senior's Team there & get the feeling that it's very much a Club within a Club.

I'm in my 8th year there so have watched it develop from a 'goat-track' since it was acquired by Leeds Golf Centre.
Many folks wouldn't know of us as we don't offer 'Opens' as the owners don't need to generate funds in that way since Pay 'n Play, Societies & Corporate are fitted around a small membership base where everyone pretty much knows everyone else. There's a small but active Senior section giving lots of opportunities for golf at other Clubs in the area via them & the LDU (Leeds Union of Golf Clubs- just £15 to play at the best courses in Leeds).
It offers 12 months of the year golf (has been fully open this winter) with outstanding practice facilities & 7 Coaches
At just under £1,000 for 7days its the cheapest in the area & filling up fast.:oops:

It's been so long since I played it, I don't remember it as being easy. If it's the course I'm thinking of it had some fairly tight fairways that had me using fairway wood of the tee.

I was going to mention everybody thinks Pannal is the best in the immediate area. Knaresborough and Oakdale are next according to people I play with. From what everybody has told me.....Flaxby was a gem but so mismanaged that it went kaput. It had the drainage etc and had plans to turn into a super course...and right next to the A1.
