Was looking at the Kindle Fire HD, Google Nexus and this and finally went for this after finding it for £237 with £50 cashback, so £187. Not bad me thinks.

Now, how do I work it? Anyone got one?

Before you do, Carphone warehouse are doing a deal at the minute
Samsung galaxy Ace (Its ok) for 21 quid or so a month and they throw in either a free kindle or galaxy tab 7. Fantastic value if you ask me.

Tempted by one myself. Got HID a anilos flame 7 which was great value and suits her need but feel I'd benefit from a system with better support 're: updates etc.

Baa here too, just ordered new ipad 4 - Apple 1-day online sale today so might be worth checking out ipad mini price?

No discounts on anything cutting edge. the retina display ipad has about £40 off or something... best discount is on the macbook air and the ipad covers.

Like that samsung the OP has bought though, i am starting to seriously consider an android based device... guy at work has the nexus 7, and its a lovely bit of kit!

I've been meaning to ask someone for a while now..... What the beejebus is a retina display? and what makes it so different from previous display systems that I assume also used that particular part of the eye?

It is high resolution, basically a better version of standard HD. On a mobile device, how good does it need to be to browse the internet and watch movies?

Exactly what i told the lad in my office who went and paid an extra £50 odd for one for that reason...

It is based on achieving a resolution whereby at a desired distance from the screen the human eye can no longer distinguish that the image is made up of pixels.
The retina is measured by Pixels Per Degree (PPD) rather than resolution or PPI (Pixels Per Inch) or DPI (Dots Per Inch). The human eye is said to have a PPD of 53, so if the resolution of a screen is great enough at a specific distance from the eye and it matches or exceeds 53 Pixels Per Degree then it is said (by Apple) to be a retina display.

Having used a non-Retina iPad 2 (1024x768 resolution, 132 pixels per inch) side-by-side with a Retina iPad 3 (2048-by-1536 resolution, 264 pixels per inch) there is a big difference in the clarity of the image, especially when reading/writing text.

All of the current tablets offer a great web browsing, movie watching, social media experience these days, it all depends on what application store (if any) you prefer or already have ties to. Once you've owned the device for a few months, purchased some applications to run on it etc., then jumping ship to the alternative can prove costly.
If you have an Android based phone, buying an Apple iPad would prove costly as you'd be buying apps from both stores, and vice versa. The same goes for other devices and integration, if you already own devices by a particular brand it makes sense to stick with it for compatibility.

As for the "sheep" mentality. Based on that reference if everyone were to suddenly start buying Android based devices would they themselves then become sheep?

Android / IOS / Windows / OS X / Linux / Ping / TaylorMade / Nike / Cobra / Ford / Vauxhall / Sky / Virgin / Tea / Coffee / Coke / Pepsi - buy whatever suits you, it's your money afterall, and it's what you do with it that's important.

There is indeed a sheep mentality out there that believe apple only make superior equipment. Buying into android alone is not the same as it is freely open to many manufacturers. Buying samsung only should they become no.1 8n the respective markets would begin to take on a similar stigma but less so as they are using a freely available operating system which is more favourable to many users as it is far more flexible than ios5 & 6.

Flexible yes, cumbersome? Absolutely

I use both and iOS is miles ahead IMO in terms of ease of use. Granted you cna't customise it the way you can on Android but is it really that much of a deal breaker?

Apple may have its non believers but IMO, you can't beat them for quality and operating system.

Love my iPad, I'm ordering the gf one cos she keeps pinching mine!

I have to say I agree with this 100%

When I was looking for my upgrade I tried the S3 and iP5 side by side.

After 20 minutes trying to figure out the S3 it suddenly dawned on me I hadn't learned anything and was no further forward.

IOS, x100 more simple.

I would also add the build quality of Apple products as opposed to rivals is something to consider.

Take the iPhone5 vs the S3 S3 = Plastic - iP5 = Aluminium and Glass

Same with the tablets also.

I have the IP5 and a 32gb Mini Ipad.

They are both great and wouldnt swap them for anything else. Yes the others are certainly fine pieces, but I prefer Apple.

Not because everyone else does :)

Got to agree with the Apple comments on here, I use the Ipad and is fantastic for all my needs (including their version of spreadsheets and word)
and is very easy to use and sync's nicely with my phone (very important for me)
If I changed to Samsung I would have to change tablet and phone and far to much hassle

Looking at an Ipad as I'm a luddite and really don't know the difference between any of them so wanted an apple as I know what I'm getting - kind of. I want it for lots of apps (mostly golf, music, social media and watching tv). Thinking 32gb will be more than sufficient. Am I being a sheep or a luddite
