Jules Bianchi 'fought to the very end'

Jules Bianchi has died, nine months after suffering severe head injuries in a crash at the 2014 Japanese Grand Prix.

Can't say I'd ever heard of the chap before seeing it on the news this morning but, then again, I'm not a really an avid follower of Formula 1. Sad all the same. Was he somone of note?

Just woke up and saw this on the news. Really sad to hear. I'm not a Motorsport fan but I was reading an interview his dad did only on Thursday saying that they'd reached a point where they weren't sure if Jules was going to make it out of his coma. So to see 2 days later that he's died really got to me.

Hopefully they can find some comfort knowing that he was doing something that he obviously loved and was very talented and good at.

It was a shocking accident. And the sport is safer because of the changes implemented since that accident. But that won't be of any comfort to Bianchi's family.

So sad as these things shouldn't really happen these days. But I suppose they can - and they do.

That said I'm not sure that by being in a coma the guy was much capable of 'fighting to the very end'. It's the sort of language that cancer specialists don't really like or encourage as it implies hope where the hope that may arise for someone 'fighting' such things (largely in their mind) requires a significant spiritual leap of faith. And most of us don't have a spiritual belief these days - our life isn't so much in the lap of the gods as it used to be.

I remember seeing the crash and it was horrific, but also circumstances hugely unlucky for him to come off at that particular place when the recovery vehicle was where it was. Very sad.
