Today's debate......

I seen posted on here the saying "If you can hit 1 good shot with a club, then when you hit a bad one it's your fault not the club".....

So does this mean that when 28'er hits one good shot with, for example, a Titleist 910 D3 set to low loft and open face, that he should use that driver from now till kingdom come? After all, he's hit one good shot with it.

Or Mr 28'er flushing 1 good MP69 3 iron - should he put the set in his bag, even though the other 40 shots were - well - crap?

In the "driver knows" thread, phrases implying that it's all down to the player and not the club abound. OK the club is just a club, but if it's wholly unsuitable for you, but you manage - by chance - to hit a good one, surely it makes no sense to use that club - therefore the club is wrong and you are not.

Its all about confidence.... If you feel you can hit X club be it a blade or a fugly Callaway then you can!

My driver is a super game improver, hugely forgiving etc...

I still slice the sh1t out of it.

Interesting question , I think the lower the H'cap you are the better chance you have of hitting better shots with different quality clubs , its important to have the right clubs for your standard of golf , ie in general(there are always exceptions) the 28'r will have a better chance of hitting the standard more forgiving club than the blades. so if you have the right clubs to suit your ability then its your fault not the clubs , if i hit a bad shot i can tell you for definate it was down to me .. or the bad lie, bad sand, the divot, the sun , the wind ,the rain, the helicopter , the noisey bird , or the butterfly that farted 4 holes over

The driver for me is the must difficult club in my bag to
get any sort of consistancy,left,right,slices,the whole
chebang!but its a different story with my other clubs,9-10
they will go where Im aiming,the driver no chance,this year
Ive bought a Ping rapture,and Mizuno mx 700,still crap..

But my point is..

Just because you hit a good shot with a club doesn't mean that club is right for you.
A 910 with X-Flex shaft wouldn't be right for a slower swing speed like Smiffy, for example, but if he happened to hit a good one - by chance - you can't turn round and say that a bad workman blames his tools when the next 30 go nowhere because he can't square the face.

I just think we band the "bad workman blames tools" line around too much.
Sometimes it is the club being wrong - for you!

I can understand the argument from both sides but i think that confidence has a huge part to play...

If you are comfortable standing over a particular club then the chances of hitting it properly are greatly increased...

Take for instance my situation with my driver....I have never been comfortable standing over a ball with a driver in my hand..
Instead for ages playing a 3 wood off the tee..
Iv had a Ping G10 could not hit it for toffee
Tried a few Callaways and couldn't get on with them.
Mizzy's were a big let down.
Never really tried the Titleists because they were always marketed as a better player brand but have always liked the look...

So being off my handicap i was running out of possibilities....

So i decide that seeing as im millimg my i15 3 wood and my hybrid clearly aimed by ping at the better player i decide to chance my look with the Driver...

One day i take out the I15 driver with stock stiff TFC Shaft and a loft of 9.5 deg...I was trying everything in 10.5 initially..

1st swing straight as a die...And a mile long...Cue the grin ....But after that there were a good few bendy ones...

3 months on and im in love with the thing...My bad shot with it is a low hook now...Caused now by what iv learned is my grip creeping a little strong...

I have never been as confident standing over a tee shot with any other driver in my hand...

Is it the club? Who know's.
Maybe its my tinkering with my swing grip and posture starting to pay off( a little late in the year )

All i know is that if i had not have hit that very 1st shot straight with it i think that it would still be in the shop gathering dust...

But Irons maybe a different kettle of fish..
Im sure though that with a little perseverance they could be worked into a persons game..

Oh and despite what Ping say Its forgiving enough for a so called better player club.

though the club can come into it but by how much i don't know

for example hitting an off centre shot on a wafer thin mizuno blade of a ping cavity back there might be a fair difference

of mis-hitting a modern taylor made burner, or a tour spoon metal you used to get back in the day

i agree with the above i think its about confidence in the club

Off track, but whose a lucky boy being a member of Burnham and Berrow. Hope to play there next year on route to Trevose and St Enodoc.

I think it's a bit of everything, we mostly know what we need our bodies to do, they just mostly ignore us! But occasionally everything happens in the correct sequence and bang, the pure shot. Mostly we compensate for our flaws and as said take confidence in shots we know we have repeated a couple of times. Modern technology helps as modern drivers have larger sweet spots etc. Use whatever works and let's get out there and enjoy it.

I tried the r11 driver at the range this week, felt horrible, sticking with my old cobra hs9, which I've been hitting nicely recently.
Still struggling with my iron play though.

being a member is

only live a few hundred yards down the road to, joined up this year

i don't think i'll ever get bored of it,
lots of great holes favourite is the 6th at the mo.

I would say that for Mr 28 h'capper it is more about the player than the club. But for his scratch golfer friend, let's call him Mr Scratch, the club becomes more important but good shots are still more to do with the player, the club just fine tunes it.

If you've got a dodgy swing, you'll hit dodgy shots no matter what club you'll use.
