Following on from the rules knowledge thread...

I was talking to a couple of seniors at the club last week. They were telling me about their match they played that day. The weather was awful and they decided that as they were all square after 20 holes (the second green is close to the clubhouse) they would call it a day, and play another time. I mentioned that the 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] (21[SUP]st[/SUP]) hole is a tricky one to start on again; their reply was we’re not starting on the 3rd, we will be playing the match again from the first. I said that wasn’t the right procedure, and was hit with. ‘It’s Match play, as long as we both agree we can do what we want’.

I didn’t bite at the time because if they want to play the match again it only affects the two of them. But how many folk think they can make up their own rules because it’s match play?

I agree that the rules are paramount but the replayed game will produce a winner and, overall, that will be all anyone cares about. I wonder what they will do if they had the same thing happen next time?

If they are playing a club match, DQ x 2, but if they are just playing for who gets to suck the last Werther's Original, who cares?

Yes they were playing a club match, but it's not quite as black and white as 2 x DQ

2-1/6 Replaying Match When Play Discontinued Instead of Resuming from Where Play Stopped

Q A match which was all square after 16 holes was discontinued by agreement due to darkness. The match should have been resumed at the 17th hole. However, the players, thinking it was in accordance with the Rules, replayed the match starting at the 1st tee. The result was posted. At that point the Committee became aware of the improper procedure. What is the ruling?

A The result of the match as replayed should stand. The players were not subject to disqualification under Rule 1-3 because they were unaware that their procedure was contrary to the Rules.

So if they didn't know the procedure it's OK.....but as I told them, they should be DQ'd

The point of the post was about making your own rules up just because it's match play, some people seem to think it's OK

I wonder which holes had shots given/received? Playing from the first again could potentially be a distinct advantage for someone who gets a shot at that hole but not at the 3rd.

I think the point they are making is:

1) The competition organisers just want a winner.
2) If you can toss a coin to decide a match or play it around the putting green or snooker table (I know you cant but I know it has happened!), then what power has the competition organiser got to say how the match is decided?

I dont rememeber ever entering a matchplay knockout where I have been informed that the rules of golf actually apply!

OK - contentious/devils advocate response over. Permission to shoot me is granted!

Ah Matty so nice to see another Eagles fan!

What they could do, under the rules, is to do any of the suggestions in (2) and the loser then concedes the match under rule 2 (4) which allows a player to concede a match at any time before play or before the match is finished

Totally agree with this.

As long as both teams are willing to decide the outcome, then I dont care if its the putting green, dartboard, pool table or tiddlywinks. Obviously deciding a match on the course is the preferred option but sometimes that is near on impossible within the given dates what with the tee being reserved and course closed due to bad weather.

Thats a bit Desperado. I guess the committee might see their lyeing eyes though.

I tried to get an extension on a summer match play game and was told by the competition secretary no. He said that he didnt care how we arrived at a winner as long as there was a name on the board! He said we could play the front 9 one day and the back 9 another, just play 9 or toss a coin.

I am not sure if it was "official" advice but certainly clarified the situation :-)

I guess if they all agree then unless the committee are going to be ultra officious then no harm has been done. I can't see the losing pair being able to kick off afterwwards as they've agreed to it. I can't really see why after 20 holes you'd suddenly decide to call it quits anyway. Surely it can't be that far back to the clubhouse
