It's golf, but not as I know it

Only on this forum could the guy who just finished tied second at the masters be questioned over going up a club to 5i on a190yd shot

Sorry what were people supposed to say ?

When seeing McIlroy hit the same sort of distance with 9 irons then surely people will mention it

No one is slating Rose or anything - what did you expect the thread to go like ?

But quite often on the commentary, you hear the guys say, hmm, 180 to the pin, looks like he's got an 8 iron to go.

190, 5 iron, yep, he's hitting a lot of club for the distance.

Agreed though, different game to me.

Except in high summer, rock hard ground, etc.

Hmm, some forum distances do make me smile.

Although I once hit a 60* lob wedge 175 yards. The trick was finding the right red kite to pick it up then carry and drop it those extra 120 yards :D

Agree with Phil. 190 for a 5 iron isn't that different from the game we play. It's probably between a 4 or a 5 for me. It's the 200 yard 7 irons they hit that make me think wow!!

Story I once heard that may or may not be true on the topic of club distances.

Christy O'Connor (blimey, that definitely dates me :D) was playing a Pro-Am and came to a Par 3. Having the honour the big fella hits a 7-iron and gets it nicely onto the green. His "Am" partner hits it onto the dance floor too.

"What'd you hit there?' Am asks Christy as they wait for the other two to tee off. "A 7," whispers Christy.

'I only hit an 8!" says yer man gleefully.

Whereupon, as legend has it, Christy then plays tee shots with a 5, 6, 8 & 9 iron and all find the green.

They really do play a different game to us.

Yep I've heard the same story. I'm not denying they're good, but 190 with a 5 iron from the non existent rough at Augusta isn't all that.

Quite honestly I don't care. We all know they hit the ball vast distances these days and are making a number of courses almost redundant or forcing continual modifications to cope. St Andrews is a prime example especially if the weather is benign. Even on the longest par fours into a moderate breeze it will be a driver and mid iron at most.
