It's 5 minutes, full stop.

Without wanting to deflect the op and take it off course would you really brand someone a cheat for taking longer (intentionally or unintentionally) than 5 minutes to look for a ball?? I find that hard to believe that someone would think that of someone and very harsh.

Although relatively new to competitive golf and playing on a moorland course where the rough can be very rough I've never known a player to take 5 minutes to look for a ball, plus generally if you think the ball is in the cabbage it's a quick look and move on.

if they know the rule is max 5 mins and they knowing take longer then yes that's cheating.

And all the above proves my point, 4 supposed examples/hearsay of people breaking rules or being generous with mates and not one of you said you or your mate or club did anything about it, all whispers and rumour.

I firmly believe that I, like Bill, would step in if I believed I saw something.

Plenty of times on here we have people asking for advice as they'd witnessed something and didn't say anything.

Easy to tar one group with the same brush.

Unfortunately Sean you've answered your own point, I would respect your opinion if it was specific and backed by fact, it's the point that you are generalising is my issue.

Who says I don't do anything?

Paddy, without going into details or getting personal, I'm answering what you and others posted, isn't that part of the issue on here that we answer what is posted, you never said you did anything about it.

You would seriously brand someone a cheat for taking 10/20 seconds longer than the allotted time? Wow.

of course yes. I know I'm allowed 5 mins . if I take longer then I'm cheating.
I don't see how it could be any other way.

But to brand someone a cheat - I just don't get that.

See you've started another thread on it so I may join the conversation there rather than on here.

If you adopt that attitude then why not allow 3 clubs instead of 2 when you have an unplayable lie? Or place your ball back 2 inches nearer to the hole on the green?

It's only a few inches or an extra club length. It doesn't hurt right?

Wrong.

You're being hysterical. nowhere am I branding anything. just pointing out that if a know the rules but deliberately break them then in cheating
