Is there much point of a 3 wood?

Plenty of 4 woods available.
Callaway, Cleveland, Ping, TaylorMade, Titleist - all have 4 woods in their ranges.
And that's only current clubs - all have even more in older styles.

ive always had 4woods, never played anywhere which i wished i had a 3wood in bag and played alot of courses! personally found 3woods tough to get any flight with off the deck!

Get yourself down to the coast and play the links on a blustery day. You'll soon be wishing you had a low launching fairway.

There is for me now that the missus got me an R11 3-wood for Christmas!!! :DDriver, 3-wood and hybrid perfect set-up for me.

I have never seen the need to carry a 3 wood, I use my 2 iron as it is more forgiving than a 3 wood both of the tee & off the grass. Can hit it about 230- 245 from the tee & 220 of the grass.

I really like my Diablo 3 wood though i dont really get to use it as much as I would like, If i am having a bad day with the deiver it is an excellent back up club to have as well as being able to use it on the fairway or for the extra long par 3's

Always a 3 wood off the tee for me (until I learn to strike a Driver consistently)
& I've just added a 5 wood for 2nd shot off the fairways to get some distance over the hybrids

I found that always hitting the 3 off a tee (although quite low) then because the default shot was 1/2 inch off the deck then it was tough to then get it off the fairway without topping it, so having a 5 & making its default shot off the deck, is helping me quite a bit

Horses for courses really, select & play a club range to your own strengths/weaknesses

Not sure if the question here is whether a 3 wood or a 4 wood is better, or simply whether you need a fairway wood at all. On the latter, a 3 or 4 wood is a great weapon if chosen wisely. Most courses and most players would do better if they hit a fairway wood off the tee, and wouldn't give up a lot of distance when doing so. Also, if you can hit the fairway wood ooff the deck, that brings par-5s and long par-4s into range.

I am surprised at the number of people on this thread that are not 3 wood fans.

I suppose it depends on the trajectory you tend to hit the ball on to a certain extent. For me, my natural shot with all clubs is a high ball flight and this isn't ideal on most long shots with a fairway wood. As a result, a 14 degree 3 wood is perfect for me and certainly much longer than a 4 or 5 wood as I have a tendency to hit them too high at a significant loss of yards. Hybrids too, although the 2 iron lofted hybrid that I have seems fine and shoots low before rising on most shots (down to the shaft I think).

I would say a 3 wood is pretty much an essential club for all golfers. It is what you use when you need to give it all you have got. Also a good option off the tee with practice. Buy one and practice with it until it is your friend would be my advice.

Absolutely my go to club, security off the tee, can bang it over 200 off the deck with pretty consistent slight fade. My playing pals think its odd for a high handicapper to have it as his go to club but it works a dream for me.

You should have tried mine at Bearwood Lakes last summer

I am learning to love my 3-wood, which is as well as I have Driver, 3-wood hybrid. When it is good it is very, very good 240+, and seems better balanced than the driver, when it is bad it's me. I do wonder whether I should have another club between the 3-w and hybrid, though that can be good for 200+.

Put in a 5 wood and take out your 9 iron, you're rubbish with it anyway.

I have used the r11 fairway woods and loved them, but I'm not sure if it's worth it as they are so similar to the driver.
Here's a thought, if they are so similar why not get rid of the driver and just use a 3 wood off the tee and fairway. You get to save a fortune in future, by not having to buy the most costly club in the bag and hit more fairways.

I love my R11 3 wood. Hit it off the tea for a bit more accuracy on short tight par 4s and can launch it long and straight off the fairway. Wouldn't be without it.
