Is there a point where..... enough is enough?

I dont tend to have a budget for golf, If I need something I get it, if it is more of a non essential then I wait until my shop account covers it.

luckily although I have a gf I am living alone. I just realised that I have spent a fair few quid in a short space of time on gear (mostly 2nd hand but soon adds up), clothing as I wont wear cheap crap, lessons and range time

Not justifying it just wondered if there comes a point when you all stick with what you have and say no more £££££

not yet

have you added in the travel costs, green fees etc

when we get some light and hopefully warm evenings we'll have to get out on a course sometime. I can be at Aston or Chesfield in half an hour from work.

Absolutely there is
Clubs
surely its the point where you find the clubs you like
not just buying it because its a new new shiny thing

then buy another set in case you lose them & cant find another set again ;)

clothing
in case the ice age comes again layering is the answer to be able able to play on ice age greens
so you have to buy 40 sweaters, decent waterproofs etc thats obviously a necessity ;)

ask your wife if she buys shoes for each outfit and then why you only have 1 maybe 2 pairs of golf shoes for all your golfing outfits

gadgets
as your game develops you NEED different gadget to help through problems or you'd give up the game and have to stay home and annoy your wives/husbands ....they'd be unhappy ,you'd be unhappy ...ask them if they REALLY want that :p

so absolutely theres a point ....just nobody will ever reach it :D

excellent reposte

never thought of the shoe (and could be handbag analogy also)

hence my 'its a bloke thing'

you have a nice car but want something faster or more economical

you like your job but want to earn more

you are hung above the norm.. want to be john holmes

have a handicap of 20 u want 10, have 5 u want scratch.... its a man thing :)

(please dont chastise me for my analogies as had a few beers therfore will deny all knowledge and blame the beer pixies for it)

there are worse things to spend your money  what was it Ian Dury said........... :D :D

For me getting more gear depends on a number of factors;
how well I'm playing with what I've got, whether it's worn out, how much any new innovations may help and how much I fancy trying something different. And of course my budget and the generosity of my family.

I kept my last set of irons (Mizuno TP21 with 5.5 rifles) for 12 years before I switched to a set of MP30's (best looking semi cavity Mizuno ever made imho). I probably should have changed earlier to take advantage of u grooves and probably should have upgraded the wedges that came with the set but I doubt it would have made much difference to my game.

Over the same period however I changed fairways and driver numerous times as I wanted to take advantage of the new technolgy. I occasionally buy ex demo clubs that I fancy hitting and I also like trying different putters.

My recent enforced absence from the course has however coincided with me acquiring more gear - a substitue for playing I guess. I have recently got some Callaway and Vokey wedges and also been doing well on the present front from HID and in-laws (including a Scotty Newport 2.5 and some shiny new MacGregor VIP irons which I'm yet to try on the course).

I rarely trade stuff in as usually the p/e deals are a joke and the older stuff is essentially worthless now so I have a load of my old gear stashed away.

I now reckon that enough is enough and my aim this year is to buy less gear and get back to playing with what I've got.
