Forgive me if this question has been hammered out on here some time in the past.

When playing stroke play the honour on the tee is straightforward once the round has commenced. The lowest score on the previous hole has the honour. If the scores are the same on the hole then it's the same playing order again on the next and so on.

However in Stableford when a player playing a par 4 with a shot shoots a 4 (3 pts) alongside a player without a shot who also shoots a 4 (2 pts) what is the official position regarding the honour on the next hole?

No-one I've ever asked seems to know for sure if the "format" being played trumps the normal etiquette - i.e. does the 3-point scorer take the honour over the player scoring just 2.

We often ask one another as shoulders are shrugged, pencils chewed and "you go ahead if you likes" are murmured. Some have very set views on it but never once has anyone ever been able to point to the 'chapter and verse'.

So is there an actual definitive answer in print somewhere?

I had heard that its best points, but we always just used best gross. Someone will be along soon to tell you the following

1: the actual answer
2: they play ready golf and dont care. (not me)

I'm sure JezzE confirmed at H4H a couple of years ago that, in Stableford, its best nett that goes first. So a 4 for 3 would go before a 4 for 2.

Extracted from the Rules....

32-1. Conditions
Bogey, par and Stableford competitions are forms of stroke play in which play is against a fixed score at each hole. The Rules for stroke play, so far as they are not at variance with the following specific Rules, apply.

In handicap bogey, par and Stableford competitions, the competitor with the lowest net score at a hole takes the honor at the next teeing ground.

A-ha! ( bit of A Partridge there!) That's what I've always thought to be the case. Cheers for pointing out where it's to be found.

It is indeed the case....but I've hardly ever played in a group who applies this rule. I've no idea why, maybe because medal play is so ingrained, but everyone seems to go off gross score. Personally I just don't see the point of the honour rule applying differently for different forms of strokeplay....if nearly everyone ignores a rule then it's usually a bad one.

This I suspect you may need your rule book to gain the honour in occasion.

The definitive answer.

Anyone who actually is that bothered by order of play during a stroke play format needs to take a long hard look at themselves :D. (unless they are doing so to gain an advantage of course)

The easiest way to sort things out... Play a side match and let that decide the order ;)

My attitude is that if someone KNOWS it is their honour they should be stepping forward ASAP.
Any faffing about and I'm playing ready golf no matter whose honour it is!

who on earth takes the time on each hole to establish lowest Nett? what a faff and adds to the time taken. Lowest Gross tees off first and if he/she's not ready then whoever is gets going.

Seriously.....???
If it can't be worked out within 5 seconds of marking the cards then you have to wonder how these people managed to make adulthood - its really not difficult....

Not that hard. most folks at mine announce their score when picking out their ball from hole, job done .

When I first started playing Stableford I was informed that it was the player who had scored the highest number of points on the previous hole that took the honour on the next.
So a 4 for 3 obviously tees off before a 4 for 2
;)

Foxholer is spot on.
32-1 In handicap bogey, par and Stableford competitions, the competitor with the lowest net score at a hole takes the honor at the next teeing ground.

From the R&A

"The order of play in Stableford does not fit with the general scheme of things with stroke play; it used to, but we changed it after consulting with our affiliates. Note that there is an Exception under Rule 10-2a that mentions Stableford."

The change took place in 2006 I believe

If I am player A, marking player B's card, I may know what player C has scored but unless their hcp is the same as mine, I won't know where they are getting their shots!
Mananged to get to adulthood ok even tho I still act like a child!

yes, seriously, don't know who you play with in drawn medals but I've never met people who announce at everyhole what they scored while picking out their ball, and is that gross or nett?

Maybe imurg has everyones h/cap on his card and circles where each gets strokes, everyone needs to tell him so he can work out who had the lowest nett then he can announce who plays first. All very quickly no doubt and just as fast as ready golf:rolleyes:

It mostly happens at our place and is a habit to be encouraged. If you announce your score after holing out, it gives your marker an immediate chance to agree or disagree while things are still fresh in the mind.
