Is Jordan Spieth good for golf?

And he's a short hitter too.
Averages 292 yards this year on the USPGA tour. Three yards less than Westwood and Mickelson. Hardly a short hitter. His driving distances may have looked shorter at the Masters as perhaps he hit more three woods than most.

Short hitter by forum standards I will give you.

Travino, Jimenez, Poulter.

I very much doubt that those three have any impact outside of golf enthusiasts. They maybe personalities to you and I but Mr & Mrs Joe Public would be unlikely to know who they are.

Aside from McIlroy and Santander how many golfers are used to advertise mainstream products apart from the obligatory luxury watches.

Just 4 yards more than forum confirmed short hitter Darren Clarke.

Spieth is an interesting case. Prior to The Masters there was discussion on some of the fora about his game. His PGA Tour stats show that he is middle of the pack in most things, nothing great but nothing bad, but wins when his putting is hot. In terms of driving distance, he is 60th in the stats, a respectable upper mid-table position, so he isn't a Rory or Dustin, but he isn't a Luke Donald or Jim Furyk either.

In terms of being a transcendent player, probably not. He is just too white, dull and clean cut. Tiger was a transcendent player, probably the biggest ever, and Palmer the next biggest. Tiger was no God botherer, but Jordan is not in the same intense glare of must succeed at all costs that Earl imposed on Tiger. Earl Woods thought Tiger was the second coming. Other players who have caught the public imagination (a bit) are few and far between, but Nicklaus obviously, and Phil Mick might be a contender.

Spieth looks like a good bet to win multiple majors. The Open might be a good one for him, tidy all round game, good temperament.

Don't particularly enjoy watching him, probably because as the stats show, he is average in most aspects but pieced together it is very effective. The way he dealt with the mental aspect was mighty impressive, leading from start to finish he managed the pressure amazingly well and that not shown in stats but is the most important thing at that standard.

Spieth certainly has the capability to become a top player and possibly world #1. Whether he then gets all the pressure of being the next big thing, especially the US poster boy and that has a detrimental effect on his game remains to be seen. I hope he can just play well, handle the media with a degree of openness and honesty (unlike Woods in his prime) and be allowed to go about his business

How do to world rankings work, in terms of points etc? How close is Speith to Mcilroy, is he say a win this week, away from overtaking Rory. Or is there a large gap.

Also if Speith gets closer to Rory, d'you reckon he would change his schedule and play more to keep 'x' points ahead, or not?

And also - Why do the likes of Rory not play more on tour? I know they just like to turn up for the big events etc, but I think it would be good to see the big names out more.

Just seen his interview on Sky at Harbourtown and I like him. Only thing that grated slightly was a constant reference to 'we', as in 'we won the Masters' and a comment about 'getting our brand out there' which seemed a little management-speaky.

Normally 'we' refers to himself and his caddy, many golfers say that nowadays.. eg: We hit a lovely shot into the 9th

I think he comes across much better than Tiger does now. And he is still 21 so there's is hopefully a lot more learning for him to go through in terms of media relations.

Great player but dull as dishwater, will do nothing for the game outside of golf circles. There is no 'edge' to him and nothing sellable to take him beyond golf. That's no disrespect to Speith but a clean cut all American boy is nothing new. Other clean cut guys like Freddy Couples had something like 'boom boom' for long hitting but Speith is in the robot mould both on the course and off it.

Am I the only one who couldn't give two hoots how players come accross in interview. They are human and having talent doesn't guarantee good media presence. All I want to do is watch them play great golf, how they come accross in interview is of no importance to me whatsoever.

My sentiments exactly

But is he good for the game as OP asked? He's good at golf but will not transcend the sport or engage the wider public I don't think.
