Hi all,
Just wanting some advice on irons for my Father, hes 73 and has played on and off since he was in his 20's. played with him at his club a while ago and he was struggling with his Arnold Palmer irons, i was thinking of treating him to a new set and was wondering could anyone reccomend a set of easy to hit irons for someone of his age? I was looking at some Slazenger Bazookas or something on the golf channel earlier which looked ok but thought i would run it by you guys first before shelling out any cash. Thanks for any advice in advance chaps.

Andy

My recommendation would be to try and get a set of clubs with senior shafts in as I think whatever heads they have on them the lighter and more flexible shaft will help in terms of distance and control

Slazenger Bazookas......hmm......sound luverly..... :)

I'd rather go with some cheap and cheerful RAM or similar.

Andy, get him down to a pro shop or somewhere where he can hit some clubs, but whatever you do don't buy any Slazenger junk. They simply make rubbish clubs these days.

I know this would be the logical route to take but he would just say, i dont need any of this new crap etc but if i just turned up with some new ones he would use them ;)

First things first, credit to your old man for still getting out on the course and enjoying the game at his age :)

Secondly I would stay away from the Slazengers etc. I haven't seen the irons you are on about but I am guessing they are Big ezee style large hybrid style cavity backs. In which case I would steer you towards something like the Cleveland Hibore irons ( http://www.golfonline.co.uk/cleveland-hibore-irons-steel-shaft-p-2565.html ) which are a similar style but will doubtlessly be better quality irons.

I understand your predicament with not being able to get him to agree to going to the pro shop, so what sort of budget do you have and I will give it some more thought, and does he have a handicap?

Hiya, thanks for your help, tis jolly decent of you :).. i suppose i was looking at upto say £200. ive looked on ebay at some Cleaveland launchers that i may be able to pick some of them with Graphite shafts for a little more so they maybe a good choice. He plavs off say anything up to 20 but on his day he can be a complete pain in the A**e and Drive everything down the middle,an iron one chip and 1 putt all over the place. bb

Something like the launchers would definitely be a step up from the slazengers. With the graphite shaft I would imagine you are also looking for a senior shaft as well so be careful not to lump him with some stiff graphites that he can't use :)
