Just recently been given my handicap and was wondering if many of you ever enter and opens at various clubs? I've looked online at like a central database for when these comps are and I'm a quite interested in trying one out but just wondering people's experiences of them?

Do it! Great way to play new courses at a very reasonable price compared to the normal green fee and always the chance of a prize if you play well. I play quite a few open events every year.

www.golfempire.co.uk is your friend

Me and a friend did one at Carden Park (Nicklaus Course) and it was great! You get to play good courses for usually a lesser rate and meet new people.

that open cost us £22 and I came 2nd! Played with 2 guys off 10 & 11, one was a good 10 handicapper one was an awful 11 handicapper and not the nicest of chaps!

When they're well organised they can be great but sometimes some of them are poorly organised!

I'd love to play in more but usually can't get the time off in the week to go and play them as they're normally not at weekends!

Great value for money , good opportunity to play different courses, gets you used playing along side strangers. Also a chance to win some money/vouchers :whoo: .
Get you applications in quick , the really good venues fill up fast.

Fill your boots. Theres far more Opens in the NW than any other part of the UK.
loads to go at every week especially this time of the year.

Thanks for the replys they seem to be decent! I'm from the NW and noticed loads up here but lots on the week which is a pain when I'm working 9-5 golfempire.com as suggested seems to be the best place for me to look I take it that's what everyone else uses?

Depending on region they are great, down here not so much as not many good courses have them for a comparable rate to say Scottish ones v the normal green fees. Most of the good ones also have a low hcp limit.

Imagine that might be entirely different in the NW, just have a look and dive in

Lots Dave but genuinely not a patch on up here, we have tonnes and you can play some outstanding course for buttons. Im sure Dunbar last year was less the £20

Yeah get it done, played a couple and loved them. It is a cheap way to play the better courses, but I would advise playing them a couple of weeks before in a knock about so you know the layout. Get your county card from the club shop and that can save you some serious money.

Wollaton saved us £20 per person.
Ripon city saved us £1😳

Without a doubt more quality and value in Scotland Val, but not sure about quantity.
tbh I've only looked at Fife on golf empire when I've been staying there and there's not loads compared to Lancs.Maybe due to the courses there relying on the amount of visitors during the summer.
You'd never get a course at the price and quality of say Ladybank down here.

pretty much every course up here holds and open of some sort, we had ours last week off the blue tee;s (walker cup 1999 tee)

i think that is £25 and Royal Dornoch have a few late season one is 36 holes for £40

As others have said a great chance to play other courses for a fraction of the usual green fee. Last summer in one week I played 3 very good courses (Portstewart, Malone and Ardglass) which cost £70 in total. The normal walk-on green fee for those three courses would have cost me £250.
