Independent Scotland

I do like the concept of an independent Scotland as I feel the Scots are more highly regarded worldwide than the English.
I don't know if I'll vote for independence (or vote at all), as I'm firmly in the "all politicians are tossers" camp.

I think a NO vote will see the total independence issue buried for another generation. So not in my lifetime. I'm in the heart says YES and the head says NO camp. I don't fancy Salmond much and although I think we'd probably have the financial clout to make a fist of it I'm not sure Salmond's anti English mindset is the way forward. England would be far and away our biggest trading partner and like it or not, we'd still depend a lot on England. Having a soundbyte filled mouthy upstart appealing to the lowest common denominator with an attitude to match isn't the way forward. With an intelligent political thinker and doer at the helm, in the mould of a John Smith or a Donald Dewar, it would be a sure fire certainty , except of course, neither of those would have supported independence, which fact possibly should be ringing an alarm bell.

ATM its a NO from me.

Devo Max for me within a United Kingdom.
I think many Scots support this view. Salmond and The ConDems have blocked our chance to vote on it.
It will probably happen after the independence vote as that has no chance of winning.
For 60 years the independent vote has stood at around 30%. It has hardly changed at all even with all the recent hype.

There is a massive amount of ignorance spouted from south of the border on Scottish affairs. I would imagine it is the same in NI.
I lived in England for 30 years and whilst the vast majority are wonderful people [I even married one] there is a small core who really do think that England is the centre of the universe.
Hopefully this will be a learning curve and after all the fuss we will all have a much better understanding of the four countries who make up the UK

I'm confident in my info, I realise that the no vote will probably win, which will be a shame imo.

As for those saying they'd leave an independent Scotland and banging on about Salmond and joining the euro, it's complete nonsense.

The SNP will probably win any GE after a yes victory, but after that I'd hope that Scottish Labour find it within themselves to distance themselves from New Labour in RUK, a political party Thatcher would be proud of.Scotland is a Labour centre left country, badly let down by the supposed centre left party.Keir Hardie would be ashamed, as would John Smith.

The two main UK political parties are two sides of the same coin, like the republican and democrat parties in america, there is a rizla between them.

I think it's safe to say that there is a similar sized core in EVERY Country that thinks they're the centre of all.............

Is this the reason for the shocking levels of anti English racism and petty ill informed whining that I have experienced in the 12 years I've lived in Scotland?

thats rubbish not all politicians are tossers, some are in it for the right reasons. i know this to be true having lived with two local politicians for most of my life.
 
as Salmond and his little party are just trying to make history and it's a stupid idea I sincerely hope it fails.

They are getting so embroiled in this they are forgetting and ignoring the key issues in Scotland that need addressing, this is what they were voted in for NOT devolution.

I'll be voting No as will almost everyone I know. I have no doubt Scotland would be viable as an independent country and emotionally I'd be delighted to see the Scottish flag flying at the Olympics etc etc. But the downsides are substantial in terms of economies of scale and transitional costs. I think with the Scottish Parliament, whatever its imperfections, we have enough self governance in most matters. Independence AND staying in the UK both involve compromises. For me staying in makes more sense than pulling out. (no sniggering at the back please!).

One thing that is clear to me is that this will be a vote of opinions - there will be no decisive 'facts' either way to be found.

Interesting point you make DV.

In your opinion, or any other Scots mans on here, is there something Salmond should be concentrating on instead of the independence vote?

If so, why isn't he?

Do you think that would change in the event of either a yes or no vote?

haha it certainly seems that way so far! I know stats can be manipulated either way, but pretty much all of the 'facts' presented by either side are best-guesses at this point.

For all anyone knows, Scotland could prosper and go on to be the greatest economy in the world if it went solo, that said, it could also fall on its backside. Especially as with only 5 million ish people, a couple of very large companies staying/leaving could have a major influence on the rest of the economy.

Personally I would prefer to hear independent, informed thought and opinion, not Westminster and not Salmond. We can all search for links that support our particular stance or argument.

I really wouldn't want to live in a country run Salmond, his ability to totally miss the important issues and rush through legislation like the totally knee jerk and OTT Offensive Behaviour at Football Act being a case in point.

His constant sound bites on how an Independent Scotland will be are embarrassing at times. His assurance that an independent Scotland would just walz into full membership of the EU despite the Presidents stance that they wouldn't being a case in point.

What's the betting that Braveheart is on STV on 17 September 2014?

Which has to slightly worrying doesn't it?
How can a 16 year old, or anyone for that matter, have a viable opinion without facts?
It is, after all, a pretty major decision that needs to be made - making it without facts is very dangerous...
