Please tell me I'm not the only one

I went to the short game practice area at my track straight from work last night for a couple hours of practice. Got in the car and get a phone call from my dad last night saying he's noticed a set of irons for sale in the local rag. Before I could even say anything he's spoken to the chap selling them and arranged a time to go and view.

At this point he hadn't told me make, model, flex, if standard or not

Picks me up and takes me to a rather posh 4 bedroom bungalow out in the sticks about half hours drive away. A rather well spoken gentleman greets us, takes us to his "reception room" to view the clubs.

5 Minutes later I'm on the field out the back of his house (which he owns :o ) hitting the 6 iron and I can honestly say I've never felt anything like it. I thought the feel off my R7's was impressive, but these are just in a whole different league. Buttery soft is an understatement!

After a few minutes of bartering, we agree a price, shake and I walk away with some new irons. And my dad got a pristine Ping Anser 3 for a steal too.

Oh did I mention how good they look?

This is the 6 iron, not a mark on it, front or back!!

........ Which is the same through out the set

Just a few paint fill touch ups needed on the heads but other than that, immaculate.

He had them re gripped 2 weeks ago with Gold Pride New Decade Multi Compounds

The shafts are also Immaculate. Ture Tempur Dynamic gold R300, the same as my Fli Hi with zero scratches, pitts, dings or rust.

The only club out of the set which shows a little wear is the pitchng wedge (Strike marks on the face) but a very minor detraction from what is a pristine well looked after set.

Price: 5-PW (He did chuck in a Mizzy SW too but not part of the MP set)

£80

To me, at this price these were an absolute steal and a that price I just couldn't say no to

Anyone else had similar experience(s) with an impulse buy?

Fair price Gareth and they look in very nice nick - you going to play them or sell them on?

Best I had was a retired chap getting hassle from his wife to sell some of his old kit, stuck a set of Ping G2 irons in the Freeads paper for £50. He also threw in a driver, TM hybrid, putter and standbag....loves a bargin I do!

nice Gareth, very nice, love a nice shiny blade:thup:

you'll find you really have to concentrate more and offcentre hits will lose some distance BUT you will KNOW exactly where the ball hit the clubface and correct it. Cracking price.

Single figures here you come. Good spot by your dad.

Exactly DV

I strike my irons well to be fair, just how well, well we'll soon find out :D

I'm really looking forward to trying them.

My father, in his own words is a "skip rat". Always trawling the for sale sections in the paper and 9/10 gets a bargain

Just wait until you hit one of those bad boys thin on a cold frosty morning.... then you'll be a fully paid up member of the blades society!

Look like a nice set. Are they going straight into the bag, or are you going to ease your way into them. Quite a different set-up frm the R7s to interested to hear what your plans are for them.

I'm going for a knock tomorrow night Monty so I'm going to play them and see what's what. We have the 1st medal of the year on Saturday so the R7's will be back in the bag for that.

I'm going to try and ease my way into them gradually and try not to chop and change too often.

I'm going to try them on the range and on the course inbetween medals and stablefords, probably after work and friendlies until I feel comfortable I can make a score with them in the bag full time.

I bought my mp57s without seeing them.

Used for 6 months and traded in by a guy in Grimsby, my uncle got them for 200, 3-PW with only a few marks on the lower clubs. They were hardly used as the guy strongly disliked them once he had them!

I could not say no and I feel I got a great bargain!

I would have definitely picked them up for that - serious bargain, has to be worth £80 to see how you get on with them on a longer term basis, well played!

I currently have the Fli Hi version Murph, of the 3 iron anyway.

I can hit that very well so may get the 4 iron to suit.

I meant the bladed versions of the 3 and 4i. These are a world away from the forgiveness of the FliHi. The rest of the set are pretty easy to hit.

Great post. Some cracking irons!
I did very similar. Fell in love with MP68 and ended up buying them for a silly price on Ebay (everyone scared to hit them). didn't actually expect to win them at the bid I put in!
Got them and proceeded to hit them like a gem. Far better than my old shovels not sure about all the nonsense regarding not being able to hit blades...
All I have noticed is they go far better than my old Burners. And yes a mishit is a mishit. I don't think if you hit it off centre with this club it's any worse than my others. Still if you are a reasonable golfer your not going to mishit that many? and the sweet spot seems big enough to me! Oh and the butter feel produced from them is just awesome! :-)

I used to have a set of those. Beautiful clubs. Only reason I got rid was that I stopped playing regularly for quite a while and , although forgiving for blades, I was just losing so much distance when my game wasn't on. Now I'm back playing again I wish I'd kept them.

I sold mine 6 months ago and got £150 for them, 3-pw. So you definately got a deal there.

Wouldn't bother hitting them at the range or easing them in. The range wont reproduce a proper hit on the turf. Taking a lovely divot. I tried my'n at the range and because I take a fair divot I can never hit a long iron that well off the astro paths! Keep your R7's for the medal. then stick em straight in and hit them off the proper grass!
I eased them in but to be honest I hit them great straight away and the shafts feel twice as good as my old clubs. Wished I put them all in sooner!
