I hear this regularily from people new to golf.
I'm not good enough to play in competitions.
So 2 years ago, I started a Friday night bash.
Anyone just turns up at 6 o clock puts £2 in the pot, teams of 3 are drawn and off you go for a 9 hole Texas scramble.
It's a great way for new members to meet people and they soon realise that they're NOT the worst golfers in the world.
It's held once a month and in winter (snow permitting)it's at 1100 on Sunday mornings.
After over 2 years it's still well supported and just encourages newbies to come along and have a bash.
It's also a great way to learn the rules in a relaxed atmosphere.
Does your club do anything similar?

Highwoods does something on a Friday evening called "9 and dine" (or similar).
Haven't been able to take part 'cos I don't finish work until gone 6 but it does seem a good way to meet up with new members and is quite well supported.

Yes we do a roll up on a Thursday evening for newbies just nine holes and a bite to eat after. £1 to enter and a special menu no more than a fiver.

This is a great way of introducing new members to a club, I wish they had done this where I play, with me it was bite the bullit and enter the Sunday comps with the established members which is quite daunting when you don't know anyone and they've all been playing togrther regularly, I also think this adds to the nervs and i can honestly say my first few comps were not my best rounds.

Bob that's ledge!

Is that English? :D ;)

Sorry Bob forgot you aren't down with the yoof lingo! Ledge is a colloquial abbreviation of the word legend/legendary. Generally speaking this is a fantastic idea and I hope that when I join a club in the new year that they run a similar scheme.

Apologies for the miscommunication shall try to be more magniloquent in future! ;)

that is a very good idea and a good way for poeple to get to know a few and get involved in a comp

may try that this year at our club

If you do, you must stress to those who organise it that its just for fun.
No serious prizes or rules.
Dont make it a medal or stableford, texas scramble is perfect and if it's teams of 3, DONT insist on 3 drives each. 2 each is enough.
Ideally have at least one golfer in each group who has an idea about the game.

My club runs a midweek supper club. 9 holes and a one course dinner. Something like £3-5 in the pot which obviously covers the food but also builds up a kitty for some end of season little prizes. Its not a serious thing and is hugely popular.

We also have weekend greedies (swindles) which are open to everyone and are usually mentioned to newbies as a good way of getting known. The golf isn't too serious although there is usually a 1/2 decent kitty each week but the mickey taking can be merciless. I'm all for anything that attracts new members and helps them integrate quickly

Our club has one EVERY DAY, if you are there by 11.30am then you're in... 18 holes 3 ball stableford with the best 2 scores counting. I've played at least 10 times already and met well over 50 people. Sometimes only 7/8 people turn up and sometimes there's 30 so half tee off the 9th.

there was a good post on the forum not so long ago that said if you think you're crap go sit on the first tee for a couple of hours when a competition is teeing off and watch what everyone else does. You might be surprised.
