If you lived opposite a golf course.....

of course not! would you go on any golf course and play if you weren't a member? living nearby doesn't change that IMO.

ive seen people do that at my home course, as its a links there's a few public footpaths that go straight across the course on to the beach, people join at one footpath with a couple of clubs in their hand, play a few holes then leave at the next.

one such person joined behind me hit a blind tee shot over a dune onto the fair way, i picked up the ball put it my pocket,
a nice pro v1 ;)

Well, if I had a house that backed onto a golf course, I'm sure if the club sent me an invoice, I would have no problem paying it

Thats fair enough.

To answer the OP, I would go and practice at the facility I had paid for, or I would join the club across the road as it's convenient.

No, for so many reasons.

I live next to The Grove in Herts. It has CCTV, so if I sneak on, I will get caught. I wouldn't anyway, but the £180 green fee I will get hit with is enough of a disincentive.

As my own club backs onto The Grove, and they like to maintain good relations, if they found out, I would get suspended from my own club too.

I can be at my club in about 10 minutes by car. It would take longer than that to walk to any of the holes at The Grove, even those nearest (which are also nearest to the hotel).

If it was a private club, I'd probably already be a member, hence my reason for living in a house close by. If I wasn't a member, I wouldn't abuse their facilities but if it was a public course, then I might sneek on from time to time.

I live around the corner from a golf course, i was a member of said course for a few years and it really used to pee me off most nights there was all sorts just walking on to play, practice or just generally bugger about. The course was split into 3 parts of which 2 are well away from the clubhouse infact you could play the back 10 without any trouble and a lot of people do. On a friday afternoon the green keepers car park is full of cars and vans of people just walking on and playing without being members or paying.

The club didn't ever seem that bothered about doing anything about it tbo.

I'm no longer a member, the amount of dammage that was done just hacked me right off. Not raking bunkers, not bothering to even put the flag back in after putting out, taking Trollies across greens, taking divots out of greens, all sorts.

So no I don't use it, except to walk my dog and look for top flights and pinnicals. :(

I can't see myself ever sneaking on to a course to play for free. It's no different from using the train without a ticket or shoplifting.

Surely the question would be that if your house backed onto a golf course why wouldnt you be a member there? (unless of course it wasnt very good!)
