If it wasn't for the flag...

Last night I played 9 holes with a I colleague I had never played before. At some point he played a lovely chip from about 30 yds, the ball rolled on the green perfectly in line but fast enough to hit the flag pole and bounce back about 1 ft from the home.

I said "nice shot what a pity", he walked to the ball, picked it up and started walking towards the next tee. I had already putted my ball.

At first I thought he would have counted the 1ft putt even if he didn't play it but no, he had scored a birdie on that hole!! When I asked him why he said "c'mon, that was in mate!".

I'm new to the game and he plays off 12 so didn't dare arguing about it as when I play with good players I still feel like they are doing me a favour. And at the end of the round I scored 47 and he 41 so he would have not made any difference anyway.

Still I'm gutted. Has it ever happened to anyone!?!?

Does that mean that when I hit the flag with my approach shot on our 17th a few weeks ago I can class it as an eagle 2, rather than the Par 4 I ended up with?

Bloke sounds a knob, I think it was you doing him the favour by the sounds of it

The guy is delusional and a cheat don't play with him again. I would like to see what happens if he plays football and hits the post he would probably wheel away with his shirt over his head in celebration.

Was this just a bit of a knock you were having or a comp? If it was just a knock, don't fret about it. If it was a comp....well that's completely different.

@Crazyface, it was just a very informal 9 hole after work. I didn't even get to buy the drinks for losing it. The only reason why I keep a score card in this kind of rounds is to track my game. I justed started breaking 90 consistenly and am actually taking notes of where my shots go, errors, etc. I've noticed it helps to identify frequent problems so then I can discuss them with my pro.

@john, yes your approach shot would have been an eagle using his standards...

I think the guy was just having a bit of fun at your expense.

Any player with his handicap is well aware of what has been written above so I would watch out for his crafty smile, if I were you.

If you chip from 30yards away and the ball does not finish up sitting in the bottom of the cup then it ain't in - plain and simples :)

What should you take from this:

1/ You are closer in your golf to this guy than you think as he's a shot extra on his card!
2/ If he tries to pull this sort of stunt when you are playing 'for real' he's a cheat and to be avoided!
