I tried to apologise.....

I'm going to buck the trend here, sorry.

Just 48 hours ago Leaney could not see anything wrong in what he had done, despite some pretty fierce opposition to his actions. He was absolutely adamant that he would do the same thing again given similar circumstances, and some of the language and terminology used in his posts throughout the thread left most of us in little doubt that he would do just that.

And that presented him with a bit of a problem - in short, he had backed himself into a corner in terms of his credibility and future participation on this forum, from which there was really only one way to escape.

And that escape route? To tell you all that he had apologised for what he had done. So 24 hours after making himself out to be one of the most inflexible individuals any of us had come across, most of us come home from work yesterday to find that he had performed a U-turn of gargantuan proportions, and called the golf club to say sorry.

If you read the opening post under this thread carefully it even includes another attempt at justifying his actions, by saying this 4-ball had held countless others up. But to me there is a give away in there which suggests he is trying to lead you all down the garden path - that being that the 4-ball in question have been "banned". Sorry, but I have been a member at 4 different clubs over a thirty year period, served on the committee at two, and have friends at countless others. How many clubs do you know which ban members without at least convening some sort of hearing?

And if they were not members to begin with, whilst I suppose there is a possibility they could have been asked not to return, then I am quite sure the manager would at least have had something to say about what Leaney had done himself. But no, don't worry about behaving like a bully on the golf course, it's okay because they were slow and they've upset the captain!

Sorry, Leaney. I don't believe you.

@ Billyboots. There may be a bit of poetic licence but do you want to call him a liar? Or don't you do second chances? He didn't have to post up this thread, it's not as though this is a real club.

As for instant bans and suspensions, they do happen. Gross misconduct in front of witnesses can get you an instant ban.

And I'll trump your 30 years with 44 years and committee work since '84. (I didn't barge through when Captain)

I'm saying I don't believe him, and I'm entitled to that belief. Sorry, but I have read the original thread this morning, and Leaney's views there were some of the most strongly held I have seen on this or any other forum. He was simply not going to budge. Not even a hint that he may have been in the wrong.

I do of course accept that these members /visitors could have been banned on the spot, but I find it all rather convenient. And it has certainly helped Leaney to curry favour with posters here.

Just 48 hours ago he was accusing everyone here of behaving like sheep, and now it seems there are many prepared to flock round him and say what a good egg he is after all.

Oh, the irony........

This is pretty much how I feel. Suppose we'll never know

I will take his word for it , i have no reason not to .. put it down to the rawness of the heat of the occasion, i was one here giving him a hard time about it & what constitutes a man etc , Apologising is the act of a man in my opinion , give credit where its due ,so well done fair play to you ...

I'm going to buck the trend here too. If I had been in the situation leanie was, stuck behind the four knobs, I would have done exactly (exactly) the same thing that he did. And I wouldn't have apologised. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it.

I can sort of understand why some people would choose to believe that I made this up and that is completely your choice I guess.

I always knew that would I did wasn't exactly right but at the time I felt that I was wronged so 'sod it'.

But...I listened to a lot of comments and I realised I should have took the moral high ground and that I should not have reaced in the way I did and so I tried to apologise.

We all make mistakes and they'll be many more mistakes that I'll make throughout my life I'm sure. But it's what we learn after we've made counts.

I'm no angel, far from it. And to be honest, life would be very boring if we did live like angels but I'm trying my best.

Temper, temper.

With that level of aggression it would not surprise me in the least to see you behave in such a manner. But with nearly 12,000 posts to your name on this forum I doubt anyone here will be quite so quick to give you a hard time about it.

What a great attitude, well done

The only difference is Smiffy would have topped the drive and shanked the second and be forced to let them back through anyway

My opinion (FWIW)

Personally I couldn't care less what Leaney did, he didn't do it on my course so has no consequence to my club.

He did it, at the time he thought he was right. After a bollocking from the forum members he thought about his actions, manned up and did the very noble act of offering an apology.
Respect to you mate. Lesson learnt, don't do it again. Seems you were not the only one who got a bit miffed by the slow players conduct.
