I just played 9 holes at my local course and hit a 42. My best score for 18 holes is 89, but is usually anywhere in the 90s. I had my new g5 driver which I hit well all I done is tinkered with my game by moveing my hands a bit further down the grip on all my clubs and found I was hitting further and more control. I was quite pleased, but I know it could go wrong next time I play

last week after lesson, practice and game, i thought i was getting "better". Then last night i went to the range and had a shot of my brothers irons and i couldn't hit them. Very strange. Then i used my own clubs again and everything was ok.

Surely a "better" player could have hit both clubs.

Not really. Poulter wouldn't even play in a comp last year when he lost his driver. He could have used a different one (same shaft, lie, loft, grip etc), but chose not to play.

It is difficult to jump from one set of clubs to another, as anyone who has been c/f'ed for irons will attest. Given long enough, sure you can learn to hit anything. But to just pick up a different set, probably not.

Surprised that you are getting more length with the driver by gripping it shorter! More control, yes.
