Oh well, I hate to say "I told you so," but I really did.

I joined the forum a few years ago with the intention of getting to scratch after receiving my first handicap of 42. I pretty much got laughed off the forum, but I was determined. Not only that I actually met a few people in real life who, when I suggested that scratch was the end goal, seemed genuinely annoyed that I would dare to have that goal. lol.

It’s been rough at times. Just last summer, I thought maybe this sport wasn’t for me my driver was horrendous, I was stuck at a 5, and I even gave tennis a go for a few weeks.

Then I found a new coach who works with quite a few tour pros, and I’ve never looked back. That was another point I made on this forum. Again, I got laughed at when I suggested most PGA pros were stealing a living and that I was looking for a coach other pros actually used. Ever since meeting my new coach who has a few television golfers on his books I’ve never looked back.

@Voyager EMH, I know you’ve posted about how I’ve gotten on in another “quickest 20 to scratch” thread. Well, I did it: 42 to +0.1 in 4.5 years, having never hit a golf ball in my life.

Funny thing is, I still maintain that scratch isn’t that high a standard. I’ve always said golf’s a very weird sport in that it’s mostly played by really bad players.

As I recall you were laughed at more because you changed coaches every week and reckoned you were better than them even when off a mid-handicap. You were like the Emma Raducanu of golf. Well done though, you got there in the end - good achievement. I can't see myself ever getting to single figures let alone scratch.

What do you think were the biggest factors in getting you from 'stuck at 5' down to 0? As in the final changes and tweaks to your game that got you there?

It was 100% down to finding a coach who knows what he’s doing, he saying +3 is my target this year I’ve said no chance but we will see. My 11 year old has been going to this new coach for 4 months and his handicap has went from 45 to 28 and we are just getting started. He will get scratch faster than me and goal with him is +7 and get him on the tv playing golf.

I mean what did he change in your game that the others couldn't see, that made the difference?

And sorry what’s G1Z1 ?

Just the driver everything else has always been solid. People would say I swing over the top and steep both I don’t do. New coach explained exactly how the golf swing works like no one I’ve ever spoken too and rest was easy.

Well done. Great achievement. How often have you played and practised to get down to scratch?
I play 5 days Monday to Fri as long as it’s not raining bad. Practice has definitely slowed this year as it’s focused more on my son now at nights after school. Take him for 9 holes 3 times a week again if dry and I have a weekly lesson to keep me from going offline.

Being able to play that often and regular lessons will always be key

Especially the playing

But got to have the ability there in the first place

I hear this a lot and really don’t agree with it.
Two of my playing partners also play 5 days a week, they play weekends so I only play with them x3 a week and there both horrific at golf. If you are not coordinated no amount of golf or lessons will make you good. Coordination and being athletic are key for golf. In my opinion of course

I think you'll find I backed you...

Well done! Will you keep pushing on now? Surely a new target of winning an open or something? I know you've got the time to keep putting in (unless you've started another job), still got the hunger?

Hence why I said you have got to have the ability there in the first place as well

It’s been a long running thing on here about how good someone can get with lessons etc

Some refer to Syed who believes with enough training etc someone can reach high levels

Where as I am always in the belief that you will only ever be as good as your natural ability allows you to be - you can’t teach that

Honestly hit my goal. I now get a buzz going on a Sunday watching my son play competitive golf. Focus is 100% on him now. I’ll keep up my weekly lessons mostly because it’s the highlight of my week as me and my son both go on Saturday for a lesson and I love watching him improving at a fast pace,

I remember G1Z1…. I didn’t realise you / people have multiple accounts..

Didn’t you build a home sim in your home?
Yes didn’t use it hate hitting into a net and sold it and now considering putting another in this winter for my boy. Not 100% sure yet but thinking dark nights winter he won’t get out much to play so sim might be good for him.

Awesome work! Congratulations!

I'm hoping I can replicate this, albeit in a slightly slower timescale, as I spend more time caddying and taxiing my daughter to her golf events. I've just hit single figures in year 3, if I can keep up the progress I'm making hopefully be <5 in 2 years and then see from there.

I've said it before, but I believe something about most golf instruction and how golfers want to learn removes athleticism. There's so much focus on static positions, and trying to have a perfectly repeatable robotic movement, rather than just being an athlete and using hand eye coordination like pretty much every other sport out there.
