If, say you have 4H and 5-9 Irons, poor tee shot to rough on par 5 and need distance with 2nd shot, how bad would the lie need to be for you to take 5i instead of 4H?

There are a lot of variables on this one, so I dont think there is one clear answer. However, if I have a clear shot to get 180-200yards I would generally choose the 4H. If the lie was extremely bad, I would be more tempted to use a PW or 9i to get out of the mess I had put myself in !!

The 4H will better for you in a bad lie than a 5i with a controlled shot.

If i've got 160-200yds into a green with no bunkers or hazards around the 150yds mark I'll use my 5 or 6 iron as its fairly consistent and will nearly make the journey.

If i've got 160-200 into the green but trouble at 150yds then i'll use my rescue club and go for the green.

I think the on-course situation dictates to be honest with you, ie. if its a small green the iron every time. If its a green with very little trouble around it then i'll be tempted to fly my rescue in. The lie doesnt really matter, I practise with my rescue on the range so i'm used to sweeping it off a bare lie.

Depending on the rough, you could get a flyer which would suggest you might want to under-club. More grass behind the ball could mean you would have to have a steeper angle of attack which could de-loft the club. Is the grass wet or dry? Upwind/downwind? What sort of slope is the lie? Lots of permutations on this one.

Some useful answers - thanks.
I suppose the question comes from the fact that I feel much more comfortable hitting down-ish with a 5i than a sweep with a hybrid in a couple of inches of grass

As mentioned the lots of variables to consider, on of the key ones and the one most people forget is the way in which the grass is facing around where your ball is sitting. If the grass is growing towards you against the swing it will be alot harder to get through the shot, therefore a higher lofted club is normally needed.

If the lie was ok the 4H would be out, if the lie was bad I would chip the ball back into play with a 7, 8 or 9 iron and then take the 3h to finish the job (usually back in the rough).

I would have thought an iron approach with a hybrid would be needed from a bad lie? I tend to set my hybrid up like that with a bad lie and with a good one I tend to set up like a fairway wood or back to iron set up if I don't have the confidence or playing percentages.

Dependant on the lie and the danger in front of me. If it was an ok lie and there was nothing short of the green (ditch, water or bunker etc) I'd give it a go working on the principal that it may not fly full distance from the rough but may run a bit further if it came out low.

A badl lie would have me trying to get it out as far down as it was safe to do so with the lie.

Use an hybrid like an iron not a wood.

I'd just go with a 5 iron.....it's my latest "thing" (not to take unnecessary risks)

I'd only use a wood or rescue if I could get home.....which ain't gonna happen on most par 5s!
