• We'd like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Holidays and a very Merry Christmas from all at Golf Monthly. Thank you for sharing your 2025 with us!

How would you respond?

I wouldn't be bothered. No-one got hurt.

I have hit balls past groups in front on the odd occasion by accident. It happens. A quick apology and get on with enjoying the game.

If someone did it a few times then I would wait and have a chat with them. My reaction to them would depend on their attitude.

All the posts on this where people are getting really vexed and saying that you would whack their ball in a lake are ridiculous.

I wouldn't want to play within a hundred miles with someone who knows nothing about golf etiquette - where do you play

It was at one of the many golf courses in Surrey but to be fair it has nothing to do with the course, but to do with the people that play there. For all I know it may have been a visitor, so I would rather not name and shame the course.

Whilst waiting on the 17th a ball flew up towards the tee where we were standing. You can't see the 17th tee from the 16th due to trees etc... When I walked past this one, I have to admit that I did hit it with my wedge into the waist high rough.
Sounds like I reacted the way a lot of people would have, which is good because I didn't want to be considered as having over-reacted.

Was it just the one tee shot or did all 4 fire away?
If it just the one you maybe have to consider they didn't think you were in range, and a wave of the arms and quick apology on next tee/green saves lots of aggravation. But if it was clear and deliberate attempt to move you on a complaint to the pro shop commitee is in order.

On fishs post about the Marshall whats the point if he is not going to encourage groups along!

All four teed off, it's just that only one had the minerals to get it all the way to where we were stood.

I'd have assumed that the first one was an accident. If it happened again then I'd be having words with the guilty party. I've been hit by a sliced driver. I know how much it hurts, it kept me away from golf for quite a while, but accidents happen and sometimes the ball just flies further than you expect.

Well that was deliberate then as in your opening post you clearly state they were waiting 5 minutes prior so they obviously ran out of patience, no excuse!

Agree with snelly, as a one off it is probably an accident. I hit our 9th green from 250 last month, I was laying up, got a flier and the ball rolled pin high. I apologised to the group putting out and no harm was done.

If it happens repeatedly then say something. Hitting the ball away is a bit childish

I would have gesticulated at them with a loud shout of "pardon ?" then played my shot and walked on. As the OP hasn't intimated that it happened again would take it as a mis calculation on their part.

Have never " fired " a ball back at anyone, that's bang out of order no matter how riled you are.

From a different perspective , when playing with some Senior members in the roll up they were encouraging me to play my second into the 9th green with players still putting " as you wont get there in this wind " Waited and they did apologise after my 3 wood went past the pin !!

I would have just turned around and shouted "fore!" back at them. Certainly wouldn't bother touching the ball (although a mate did leave a goose turd stacked on an offending ball once...:D)

Some years ago, this happened to a mate I was playing with, so he delved into his bag, took out a handful of tees and spelled out a brief but pithy message beside the ball.

It can happen by accident and I guess we have all done it at some point. I played a society on Friday and won longest drive with what I thought was a pretty good whack. On a par 4 yesterday, which was 30 yards longer than my best on Friday, I hit a totally rogue drive and it rolled onto the green whilst the group in front were still putting. I have never hit that green before and will probably not do so again but should I now always wait for the green to clear before teeing off?

PS Had a ball also come within a yard of me at head height on Friday from a different fairway. No shout of FORE at all. I just teed it up and left it there. Oddly, when we passed the fairway a few holes later it was still there. No-one had picked it up - not even following groups. No idea why!

If the big hitter was a member he should have known the distances and should have known better. Equally, everyone can make a mistake. First time, I wouldn't be too bothered. Second time, he'd get a wave. Third time, it'd get knocked into the rough.

A 5min wait and all 4 play is clearly out of order, so complaint is necessary, it doesn't seem as if they cared either as there is no mention of apology either

As they had been waiting, I might have done that when I hard their first tee shot. Certainly would have done it on the one that went past.

I would have played my shot, walked on and teed that ball up too! That gets the message across in an 'amusing' non-confrontational way.

My attitude is certainly different if it happens a second time!

Big area, small target maybe, but I've seen - and in 1 case felt - the results of 4 or 5 'ball strikes' and there have been some close calls too! It's not trivial!

i know someone when at the machrihanish weekend who wrote a swear word on someones ball as it trundled by them while waiting to hit second shot. fair enough it was a blind tee shot but come on. for legal reasons i cant name the writer;)

I like this idea!

i would just have a polite word

hopefully they're just apologise. if it happens again on the other hand...

i ve come close a few times to people in front and its always been accidental

You are perfectly entitled to go for the green on a par 5 - and should wait if the group ahead are still putting and you know you have the ability to get there. That said it is more likely that you won't hit the green and hence your wait will not have been merited - in retrospect. But wait you rightly did - and so I would then make all efforts with my playing partners to catch up with the group in front as quickly as possible so that the following group can't say that you delayed them overall.

Meanwhile in general if a ball rolls past me off the tee - I turn around and have a good solid look back. No gesticulations - just sufficient that if done on purpose the player can deduce that I wasn't that happy. And if it was a mistake then the player will realise his tee shot has reached me and has the opportunity to apologise - which he will if it was.
