How would you play this hole?

Standing on the tee, the oob right is about 10' away from you, and your bad shot is a push-fade. ....

Anything missed left will be blocked out from the green by big trees, ...

As said above, lay up, lay up, wedge and one or two putts.

Or if you're me, three putts :o :D

That's ok if you're guaranteed to hit the green with the wedge, but I'm equally likely to miss the green, chip and 2-putts for a 6.

I agree with you in principle though.

I've seen you play and so have a rough idea of your distances and I still think 3 shots makes sense irrespective of what you use to do it. I don't know which hole this is on the course and where it falls in terms of the match. Howver isn't the first rule of matchplay to make your opponent win the hole. By playing it as 3 shotter you are effectively asking your opponent to take on the challenges you are quite clearly not happy about doing so yourself.

If he has the honour and even if he takes the drive on, stick to your plan. If you go first, seeing you "playing safe" might fool him enough into relaxing too much and making a hash of it. Either way a five will probably be good enough for a half and make him win with a well earned par

which one is this Gary 14th or 16th?

Neither. The 2nd

might just hit a 5 wood and the 7 iron to the green.
as I have a fade a dogleg to the left is not my favorite.

It's a straight hole, but hitting those clubs would leave me about 70yds short
Not everyone hits the ball as far as you Chris :D ;)

leave about 100 yards and an easy wedge. Stick it close and hole the putt.

If I were confident on hitting a wedge close from 100yds I wouldn't be playing off 10. I'm happy to just hit the green.

The bad news is I've think you've already done the damage. Your post reads as though you can't play the hole at all and so standing on the tee tomorrow you'll be full of nothing but negative vibes.

I know we're often the worst people to judge ourselves, but I don't think that's me. I'll analyse something until the cows come home but when it actually comes to do it I'm quite good at emptying both brain cells.

It's a medal for all the seasons winners.

Just looked at SS2, and my average score for the hole is 5.13 (30 recorded rounds off the whites).

It's S.I.5 (would be lower if it weren't so early in the round) so I effectively 'get a shot', but I hate standing on the tee surrendering a shot to par before I've even hit the ball.
I'm probably thinking about it wrong to most looking in from the outside, but something grates inside if I play for bogey from the tee.

But surely a bogey (you didn't make it clear early on or I missed it - no matter) in a medal round especially early on has to be better than a double or worse and the negative effect that'll have going forward. You get a shot so I don't see it as surrendering anything. If it was one where you don't get a shot I'd view it as a negative thing to accept a double. Make the bogey, and hope that you can find the middle of the green with the wedge and maybe sneak a putt and move on. No momentum breaker or card wrecker and plenty of opportunity then to get that "surrendered" shot back

Surely in medal, being on h/cap for the first 5 holes is ok? Then you can see how it goes. To me, this is a 3 shotter. Take the bogey. There must be other shot holes you view as opportunities to get one back. Your average of 5.13 shows that this, for you, is a par 5.

The funny thing is, I'm quite happy if I pull my drive left and have to lay up over the trees, but hate the thought of deliberately not being able to reach in 2 from the tee.

At least if I pull the tee shot with a driver I know I tried to be on in 2.

The more I read back myself trying to justify going for it, the more I can see something is wired up wrong in my head.

I still won't be able to do it though.

Pretend you are me then (you might need to buy a new wardrobe though).

:D

If I could putt like you I wouldn't be off 10 either.

I do struggle with wardrobe... whether to wear the black or grey trousers

Here's a rubbish attempt at showing the hole.

The tee is the red blob bottom left.
OOB right is the red line.
The ditch is in yellow (at about 225yds from the tee).
The fairway is outlined in blue.
The circled trees are the big ones that stop you reaching the green if you're behind them. They're just over 300 from the tee.
The hole is just over 450yds long.
