How would you play this ball?

I don't understand all the options and issues - if you had the grass tuft the other side of the ball I might consider something unusual but you have uninterrupted access to the back of the ball so just play your normal shot for such a common situation.

My other response would be 'without finesse'

I am greenside in the middle of summer, my ball is sitting on mud and is so low that all the grass is in the bank well over the top of the ball... its not your every day greenside, summer shot and if it is it should not be.

Anyhow, no drama, more than anything I was interested to see if people saw it/played it as a bare lie or a fluffy one and how they adapted their shot for that. Very interesting so far.

On closer inspection, that lie looks almost as if it's an old divot hole? Blame the flop shotters at your place :D

Na, if you look behind it you can see another one. In the winter the bit the balls on will be saturated and the grass even more tuffty. Its a nasty qwerk of our drainage or our green staffs strategy. Kinds trufts with mini rivers running between.

what did you end up doing Alex? :D

Treated it like a bare lie, picked a low bounce 50* gap wedge back in my stance, got steep on it but intended to the ball and all the grass in front of the ball. It bounced twice, rolled out and I missed the simple putt..

Back foot with a 56 wedge looking to land it just on the green and then for it to roll out

The truth I would go to chip it with a PW and then proceed with 50% probability to thin it as I stop at the ball, as I would hate that lie.:o

Something with a sharp leading edge would make me a bit yippy out of that lie, frightened of digging the leading edge in the mud. So I'd pull my PW which is a bit more rounded and would still come out ok even if it was a bit of a drop kick.

A fun way to play this is to put it back in the stance and hit down on it with a putter.
Practice is required to judge how much top spin you get

I've used the toe of a putter to good effect a few times (not recently as the shape doesn't work). Wouldn't do it here though, as there's too much height in front that needs to be got over. 9i, PW or 58 would be my choice in this case.

Does look like old divots btw!

Ye, its not though. If you look in the first pic there is another next to it, behind it and so on. Its sadly a common thing in places at our gaff. You will note the first person to comments was fundy as he too knows well these lies. Its a poor drainage scenario left over from the winter. :( Would be kinda strange to have a divot that deep by the green too.
