Apart from improving the overall condition, I'd like more bunkers (fairway and greenside) and a couple of ponds or streams creating risk/reward choices.
As our course is still young (sixth year) it is still growing and developing. What I'd love to do though is get some bigger trees and define some of the holes that run parallel better and make it a tighter driving course. Other than that it isn't too shabby. They are growing the trees to separate the holes but it is a slow process. We have a few maturing trees at backs of greens that could be transplanted to help the process
On our muni we tried to improve a par 4 which was fairly short by digging a ditch about 30 yds short to stop the oxygen thieves running their ball in and have to play a proper shot as it was middle of the first nine and stroke 1. It would have also helped a drainage problem at that point
The council told the volunteer workers to fill it in again as it was a hazard to dog walkers
What I would like to see at ours is some fairway bunkers - at present there isn't a single fairway bunker. We have sufficient water hazards, both ditches and ponds and the greenside bunkers are adequate in number if not in the condition of the sand.
The drainage has been improved over the last couple of years, the greens are improving but as seems to be the case with previous posts bunkers are what needs most attention.
We have had the architect and directors drawing up big plans for improvements over the past 6 months at our place - I thought they would have been ready at the AGM last month but they were still tinkering - like what to do in front of 18 - lake, heather, bunkers etc - looks like a lake is going to be very difficult so not sue what will happen - I would love to see heather all through the bowl and across the valley in front of the first. Indeed, in his plans he did suggest a lot more heather, more for scenic properties than strategic - i.e. in front of tees but not all the way down each fairway - but I think this has been changed - shame as I think this would have been great.
A lot of the other suggested changes tie in with my own views - I will list what I know, but this has not been all signed off yet and is subject to change and there are probably lots of changes thatI don't know about:
1. new tiger tee across the path next to the practice green - this will create a whole new line off the tee, a slight dogleg right and bring the bunkers much more into play. I think they are changing the greenside bunker and there was talk of replacing the gorse on the left of the green with heather
4. more trees between 4 and 15. Plus extending the fairway wider beyond the bunker on the left - a reward for clearing it, not the rough that is currently there.
5. new fairway bunker on the inside of the dogleg near the smaller trees. They are curently doing lots of drainage work in front of the green. They have also drained the lake behind the green at the moment and are dredging it and have taken down lots of trees at the other side behind where the 12th green is
7. trimming the trees up the left that overhang - this will make it slightly easier - not sure if I like that, although probably necessary or the health of the trees
9. They are extending the lake right across the fairway towards the green, removing the back tee to make it shorter and taking the tees slighty to the right. This is the resevour that the sprinklers are attached to and making it much larger will allow us to take our daily water allowance from the big lake and store it for when we need it - hence make conditioning better in drier weather as reserves will be bigger.
10. a new lake to the right of the green - this will look nice and clear an area that gets wet in bad weather. They are also filling in the small ditch short of the green - I would have liked them to widen this properly and feed into the new lake!
13 - I think they are now allowed to put in a greenside bunker
16 - big work here - all the tees are being raised so you can properly see the drive, where there will lurk new bunkers left and right. I think there will also be a new greenside bunker and possibly they will put fairway through the hollow in front of the the green
17 - trimming the trees back on the right that overhang and adding a new bunker to the right of the green
18 - the big issue is what to do in the dingly dell in front of green!!
Rough - they are hoping to bring back more longer rough to tighten up the course - it used to be much tighter but very tough and lots of time spent looking for balls. They have just finished a 3-year study working out the best method of growing whispy rough without the thick meadow grasses and have now implemented this in front of 2 and will progress to othr areas.
My course needs new paths. The existing ones were laid with red small stone chippings then rolled. They have come to the end of their usefull life and need replacing. Things like the quality of paths around the course add to the feeling of how good the course looks. There aren't many, about 5 in total but they need replacing.
one thing we don't need is more water.
having such a high water table does kind of restrict conventional thinking but there are ways.
elevating one or two greens (though at £25K a time I doubt it).
we have few bunkers (that water table) but there is nothing to stop building up - put in a few humps and hollows
even simply sculpting the fairways and rough.
we've had a lot of tree planting but we have to wait for them, a few quicker growing drifts of bushes and shrubs perhaps
